Are these 4 movies the remake of the same story of the original evangelion series with better animation or are they something of a different universe / timeline type with same characters but with a different story like what the fate series have done?

It’s more like a different universe almost. More like a different timeline in the same loop, Shinji making different decisions bad and good. Not making a decision and being more decisive in different loops.

The first movie is almost exactly the same as the beginning of the show, kinda with the second movie as well, except for the ending. But the 3rd and fourth movies are completely different.

It goes manga is 1 timeline, then show, then end of Evangelion movie, then death and rebirth movies, then these four movies. I’d say the last movie makes watching all four of these worth it because it’s kind of a beautiful ending to the series, even though end of Evangelion was kinda perfect too.

The first movie is pretty much the same story as the Evangelion TV series, but movies 2 and after take a twist on the original series and create a new story. I definitely recommend giving these movies a watch. They're great!

It’s the same story basically, just different decisions. But for me I only really needed to watch the show and the end of evangelion movie

The first film preserves the theme and originality of the first 6 episodes of the main series. The second film is a little different,
, and with it the relationships between the characters change at the same time. The third film changes completely and follows another systematic plot and the last film decides the end of the whole Rebuild of Eva!!!!

The first movie is identical to the anime except it's faster paced and it has a completely new scene added at the end.

The second movie is where it begins to branch out into a new continuity. There are some reused plot elements that you will recognize from the anime if you have seen it, but they are basically repurposed for a new story. There is a completely new character we have never seen before and most of everyone is characterized differently, some in more drastic ways than others.

The 3rd and 4th movies are entirely different and are 100% new content.

I hope you enjoy the tetralogy. End of Evangelion is my personal favorite film in the franchise so i do recommend you get around to it if you haven't even if you are just interested in the Rebuild tetralogy.

This is a little bit unrelated but I think the person responsible for the entire franchise's music, i think he delivered a hall of fame performance in these 4 films. It's some of the best stuff he's ever made and I've listened to his entire discography. The music alone makes the watch worthwhile.

It's not the same story and the animation isn't better, not even close.

they are like a sequel to the main story but in an alternate timeline. one character which i think can be thought of as the same between NGE and these movies is nagisa kaworu. you would know why when you see his appearance in the movie.

Honestly it's debatable. The problem with these older anime from before 2000 is that a lot of the boomer fans are blinded by nostalgia and refuse to acknowledge any remake's merits.

But with Evangelion, NGE and Rebuild actually do trade blows somewhat. As an unbiased viewer, i can see qualities you could like in either's visual presentation. I think both NGE and Rebuild do a great job leveraging the animation technology of their time and both hold up very well against their peers released in a similar time period.

Granted, I do have issues with the cgi in 3.0+1.0, I do think that is significantly less visually polished than everything else in the franchise, but overall the animation is great.
