So in the end, it was Yugi's loneliness and willingness to be with Sasami that made her the person she is and her actions. Well, I guess loneliness sure can do a lot of damage to a person's well-being.

Overall, 5/10 for this series for its drama and weak storyline. Nice to see some of the supporting characters getting their spotlights but not the way I had hoped.

I liked it. The story might have not been all that great but so wasn't the story in "Tenchi Universe" also. Tenchi series a character pieces and the story is not the focus.

Tenchi was kinda douchey at times in this version and Sakuya was as bland as he was but otherwise i don't have really anything to complain about. It was fun series to watch.

This didn't end with Yugi being added to the harem! For real? What kind of ending is this? 0/10

So what to say about Tenchi in Tokyo. I liked Tenchi Universe so much better. The only thing Tenchi in Tokyo did better than Universe was having a finale in which all of the girls contributed in some way, while in Universe it boiled down to just Tenchi. of course, it feels a bit hollow when Tenchi talks down Yugi, who's biggest fear is being sealed up (something Washu would know about, eh? oh right, they nixed that) and then the next time we see Yugi she's sealed up again. Dammit, AIC.

There are some good moments I liked, but it's ofc its own continuity that has no relationship to anything, so it feels a little weird to simply see the characters backstories changed so much. This time, Mihoshi and Kiyone have no reason to even be there due to the backstory changes. Most episodes before the plot gets going (around episode 15!) I found to be pretty lame. The most interesting thing here is probably the way Sakuya literally only exists for the sake a Tenchi, a pretty severe critique one could make about the harem genre- and the fact that Tenchi considers his harem a total nuisance and genuinely prefers Sakuya (but when could have Ryoko or Ayeka? What an absolute stuffed shirt).

I guess the idea of the Tenchi harem being a subconscious effort to neutralize the beautiful space alien threats to the Earth is interesting but only obviously applies to Ryoko and Washu...Ayeka's a space alien but not exactly the vicious princess of a militarist empire, as much as I might like her to be; what threat could Mihoshi and Kiyone cause? Leaving behind advanced technology? Botched first contact procedures? It doesn't really work.

wow who would have thought showing compassion and kindness and disciplining an unruly child would work so much better than sealing her away for 3500 years. no one could see that coming XD

Yeah, a fella's memory serves me right. This is still the weakest installment in the Tenchi lore. It's not the worst anime I've ever seen or anything like that, but after this re-watch I'm starting to remember why unlike the other ones, I don't remember too much from it.

I do think the idea of someone (Sakuya) effin' stuff up in Tenchi's harem was an interesting one, but it was just executed all wonky. Sakuya's not interesting, entertaining or stands out at all. To be fair, it is hard to be when you have the other women as a cast. But golly, all of them seem like nerfed versions of themselves.

Tenchi was also crouching tiger, hidden jackass more often than he had any right to be. Uncaring about the girls' feelings toward him, and yelling at them at times for even visiting him 'cause like, how dare they!! How dare you someone who has known me for 2 years come visit me because you want to spend time with me!!!!

None of the antagonists were good either. I'm glad boring guy (the guy who was with Ryoko for a bit and whose name I cannot bother to remember even though it's been said at least a few times), and those other 2 characters serving Yugi were gone.

Tenchi moving to Tokyo is another nice plot element thingy (living or visiting that city is like every weeb's nocturnal emission too, y'know?)

Yugi took so long for her plan to go into motion, but when it did, she ended up being sealed again! Bummer! :-/

Yeah, I'm just using this episode discussion to complain a bit, but who cares?~ lol

TENCHI USED BRIGHTU SLAPPU ! IT'S SUPER EFFECTIVE !!!
Seriously guys, Yugi systematically manipulates Tenchi and every member of his harem for months, she creates a "shadow" with her own consciousness and personality to do so - whom she then basically executes when she doesn't prove effective !! - she grooms a child into joining her, she ruthlessly executes one of her own subordinates, SHE TRIES TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD AND KILL EVERYONE IN IT, and Tenchi figures out that "akshully we should just try to be nice to her"?!! Because she looks like a little girl (despite being a 3500 year old super mutant capable of endangering the capital planet of a galactic empire)?? God I hoped Tenchi was just going to run up to her and lop her block off ala Van in GunXSword finale. What a rubbish lousy cop-out ending if ever there was one. Don't even get me started on the whole "will Yugi turn into Sakuya when she grows up?" angle Ryoko suggests. It's lazy, derivative of the genuinely interesting Sasami/Tsunami plotline from OVA 2 Ep 2 and the more you think about it the creeper it would get in practice. Even the idea of Tenchi romancing Ryo-Okhi in the OVA continuity isn't quite as weird (well almost).
It's a shame because the build-up to the final confrontation was honestly quite good. The girls stand up for themselves and they all have a time to shine taking out various opponents. Sasami stands up for what she believes in. Ryoko is very badass and also very sweet indeed, she still got an OK deal despite being sidelined in favour of Sakuya for most of this show's run (she seriously deserved her kiss at the end after everything). And maybe I was a fool, but I was genuinely stoked for an epic JRPG style duel to the death/ final confrontation like the final duel in Universe.
But this feels like 15 minutes of decent build-up followed by a smash-cut to an abridge pisstake version. How disappointing.
glassknuckles and starchaser I completely agree with everything you guys said, I'm just too mad to think of anything that intelligent RN.
TLDR for the series as a whole - Good SOL elements. Some good new ideas and situations. But the actual dramatic plot the series relies on falls flat on it's face at the last hurdle.

Since it was a Tenchi 90s production, I still expected something good despite the general criticism. Yeah, it wasnt good. Better than war on greminar, though.
