There's all this drama surrounding Yuki committing suicide but what made him do it? He seemed like such a bright boy in this movie and simply dying because of one line Mafuyu said sounds completely illogical. I don't mind spoilers, please tell me what grim circumstances was he facing that drove him to commit suicide.

I don’t think it’s ever revealed. I’ve read the entire manga and the 10th mix and it’s never explicitly stated (or at least that I know of, definitely correct me if I’m wrong! My whole explanation here is just how I interpreted everything)

But I don’t think people need grim external circumstances to develop these thoughts and cross that line. Mafuyu saying that one line is more so the final icing on the cake—it’s not meant to be the huge defining factor. It likely was just the final emotional situation that pushed him to that point. Writing-wise, it’s meant to give him that guilt that he harbors and the fear of not communicating well like we saw when he and Ritsuka argue a bit in the OVA. But in reality, it isn’t Mafuyu’s fault; that decision was Yuki’s alone.

There’s a lot we don’t know about Yuki or his circumstances, but like I said, I don’t think people need external factors that put them in this spot. During the beach scene when he and Mafuyu are walking along the sand, Yuki even talks about Mafuyu forgetting this moment in the future, kind of foreshadowing his eventual death.

The other thing is Yuki was heavily drinking when it happened. He’s not old enough to drink, so it’s likely he just got far too drunk since he wasn’t used to all the alcohol and possibly made a decision he wasn’t truly coherent enough to properly make.

I don’t know if we’ll ever know the true reason, and sometimes when people make these decisions, the ones left behind never truly know. So unless we get Yuki’s POV, I don’t think we’ll ever know, since all of what we do know from Yuki is from everyone who’s known him and are alive. So what they don’t know, we don’t know either.

I agree with the user above. It is evident that a set of factors, not fully explored in the anime/manga, contributed to his drastic and dramatic decision. Also, for individuals experiencing emotional struggles and complex inner processes, such as Yuki, circumstances that might seem insignificant from an objective standpoint often become magnified. In short, the character was likely grappling with emotionally draining moments rooted within him, stemming from both his past and present experiences (All of that suffering could have been compounded by a mental health condition, such as depression). In this context, the conversation with Mafuyu was likely just the catalyst to perform an action that was already hovering in his mind as an intrusive thought.
