Honestly wasn't a fan of this season and the later parts of season 2 becoming a love triangle drama. Preferred when it was just about a cynical guy and his two girl colleagues running a club about assisting others.

Honestly I found the first season to be way better than the second and third, they kept exaggerating over things that seemed trivial while making it sound more complicated than it was. I’m not gonna spoil you but in my opinion the ending wasn’t satisfactory enough to go through all of that (many people say this is the best romance, but I think it’s more of a coming of age drama, yes the main character has good development but that’s only because he was a loser who kept hurting others until he realized that people care about him.) Don’t get me wrong though I still thought it was a good show

What would you say the story as a whole was about? Like, in short terms.

Hm… I am not trying to be rude or disrespectful to anyone in here, so please be patient with me.

It seems like most people in here could not follow or understand this anime’s story, and therefore do not appreciate how well written this anime is.

I get it, I had to watched this anime, Sub & Dub, a couple times to fully understand everything that was happening and appreciate the subtle clues throughout the series.

I guess everyone missed all the comments that Yukinoshita, Haruno was saying throughout the entire series about how this situation can’t last and how they need to come to terms with reality, hinting to Hachiman more than once that he needs to step up.

This anime has been a love triangle since the first season, sure they started off the club as “friends”, on the surface, but each episode reveals the tension building behind the scenes, how Yukino & Yui actually become rivals, the second and third seasons only bring this to the forefront, when Hachiman has to make a choice between them.

(Whether you are happy about that final choice or not is up to you)

The context of the full story is revealed as the seasons / OVA unfold, explaining how things got to the place they are in the final season.

The last OVA shows that the rivalry is still ongoing and in the open now.

I would suggest rewatching the series in this context and then seeing if you feel the same after.

Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

I love the direction the show takes. Season 1 is a great setup to introduce you to the characters and how they do things. Seasons 2 and 3 build on season 1 and are what make snafu more than a typical romance or comedy. The characters are handled extremely well, they delve deeper into the characters than I see in most romance and it’s all backed in really good, sound reason. I think snafu handles romance in the ideal way using identity, intimacy, and communication almost perfectly to form what becomes the final relationship. I know snafu isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, as literally no show is, but snafu deals with essentially everything I find important in relationships as well as uses a lot of psychology and sociology which I am very interested in.

A very good series that has succeeded in making its characters evolve greatly over the seasons. Even if I think there was too much complexification of the characters' feelings in season 3. It's still a very good series!

The last two seasons, S2 especially were amazing to me, this is melodrama done RIGHT. It's fascinating seeing the lengths Hachiman would go to self-sacrifice himself for the sake of helping others, even though it'd destroy his image in the progress. Literally Lelouch in school setting

I guess I'm the opposite of you since I didn't think much of S1, it wasn't heavy on drama and Brain's Base's art wasn't appealing to me

Gotta be a troll right? This at the very least top 15 romance anime oat. It’s in my personal top 3, one of those shows I can rewatch 5+ times and still enjoy it. Definitely one of the better written anime out there.

I think season one is good in that it sets up the foundation for season 2 & 3, sure there is not as much “drama”, but at the start there wouldn’t be, they just met, Season 1 sets up the relationships that lead into Season 2 & 3.

• Introduces the main characters and their pattern of interaction, the quick-witted banter between Hachiman & Yukino vs the more relaxed cute talks between Hachiman & Yui.

• It demonstrates what the club is for and the start of Hachiman’s self-sacrifice to accomplish their goals, which becomes a major issue as the anime continues.

• Establishes the beginnings of the romantic rivalry between Yukino & Yui, even showing both getting jealous when Hachiman talks to other girls.

• And the start of the love triangle that is sparking behind the scenes in Season 1, only Yukinoshita, Haruno notices this and tries to clue Hachiman in.

I liked season 3. I loved season 1 and 2 way more.
But I do understand that a partial shift of focus was necessary to give a conclusion to the story and overall I'm satisfied.

Oregairu and Bunny girl senpai are one of the only few romance shows that does not feel like your average rom-com with a self-insert mc as each of the respective series start off with their Main characters being an individual who has a very distinct personality that you would not expect from a rom-com main character cuz they are not oblivious to the feelings of the main heroine/heroines that are interested in them also the character development of Hachiman is crazy good Sakuta feels very genuine cuz he acts like how a normal teenager would even tho we know how his life has been and the burdens that he carries with him both the series are one of the most popular and well written LNs although if u don’t like Oregairu it’s understandable cuz the series is not easily disgestable by everyone as the LN is very dialogue heavy kind of like Monogatari series.

I loved this anime for a while. Then I looked at it from outside:

So, a bullied and broken guy, gets threatened by his teacher. She forces him to join a club. The club leader keeps insulting and badmouthing him and he falls in love. No problems with Yui, she is just there.

The teacher asks the bully to help him, she didn't really do anything. Then after her sister comes in and some events happen, everybody is like that crowd in a zombie or a possession movie muttering the same thing, "Save Yukino! Save Yukino! Save Yukino!"

He ends up helping her. And they live happily ever after. I'm sorry, I think I'm overlooking something but... when was he helped? Did he adapt on his own and the great Yukino failed? And I've seen a lot of shitty or average rom-coms with side characters having the same problems as Yukinoshita.

Now, please tell me. Am I overlooking something? Hikigaya was just an edgy teenager who couldn't keep up the act and ends up becoming a simp. Yukino, is a bully. Yui is just there to be a puppy.

Is the anime's fault? My misunderstanding? Or another thinking and perspective's difference?

Just by making friends and interacting with others a person can change. Hikigaya went from being a loner incel to making friends and seeing women as people because of the club. Also, you don't know what being a simp means. A simp is someone that fawns over a girl that will never be interested in them, and Yukino is clearly into him since they end up together in the end.

the main selling point of this show for me was Hachiman, and he was at his best during the first season, so the first season was the best imo.

Out of all the series that include triangles that I've watched, Oregairu handles the love triangle the best. Anyways the series was supposed to be a Romance anime so I don't understand why you only expected a club helping others. . . anyways I delve rated the series 10 on my MAL so...

I feel like it took a very generic direction just to make it popular, that's why it had so many seasons.
The proposal of the first season was great, with a different protagonist but they twisted it to please the public that is used to consuming garbage, and I'm sorry to say it but I don't feel like keep watching the show worth it by taking that way. They turned a mature show that depicted interpersonal relationships and the reflections of a teenager into a average romantic comedy.

It's even too noticeable with the change in Hachiman's design in the anime, terrible.

They both banter back and forth at each other and if we’re being honest it’s all shit that’s either true or hikigaya needed to hear. At the end of series hikigaya cringed at some of the things he said at the beginning of the series. Also Yukino is not a tsundere? A tsundere is someone who masks their feelings for someone with an abrasive attitude but she didn’t have feelings for him at the time, she just didn’t like some of the ways he acted and called him out on it.

I went back to try and watch season 1, to see if it was any better or worse than I remembered. I must just not be an anime fan anymore. His cringy ass commentary in the first 30 seconds made me turn it off. These types of shows where characters go on poetic monologues are best suited to light novel/manga format in my opinion.

@JayTCU Interesting, I’m rewatching it now and I loving everyone bit of their banter back and forth, it is his stubbornness vs her unwillingness to give in. This is is a huge part of why I love this show.

She's a Kuudere, not a Tsundere. It's even in her name(Yuki=Snow/Cold). Also, those insults is what allowed Hikigaya to get closer to her and like her(since he hates nice girls) and he was never courting her like a princess, he just liked her.

I see, people liked the banter. Oregairu as well as Kaguya-sama are anime that I fell out of love from. Banter without petty insults and over the top games are something I don't like anymore.
