Season 3 seems best place to discuss this as everyone will have seen S2.

So Echidna is the witch of greed, is so greedy she collects knowledge, always trying to find out more information.

Then how did she see the fight between Betelgeuse/Fortuna and Regulus/Pandora?

Emilia had already left the area, so Echidna should have no point of view.
If she can see the entire past, then she knows everything & doesn't need to collect knowledge.

- Avoid Web Novel spoilers, stay within anime storyline so far.

I believe this is cut content, which I don't consider to be a spoiler. IIRC the Trial supplements the knowledge Emilia lacks with the memories of the world, drawn from Echidna's book of wisdom. She can indeed see the entire past using the book of wisdom, but she doesn't like doing so because Echidna likes learning, and finds using the book unsatisfying.

@mohamedo_abuduru

So greed is a hobby for her? Just to confirm, she can't see the future, just the past?

@RuneRem No, I believe it's stated she can see everything with the book, past present and future. The problem is Echidna's character is less about the actual greed and more about the satisfaction. Echidna finds the greatest pleasure in the learning process itself. Once she's learned something, she quickly loses interest. Her endless greed cannot be satiated, She's always looking for more. If Echidna learned everything that there is to learn in the world, she might be no more happy than she was before. It's never enough for her. What she enjoys is the fleeting high that learning provides for her. Does that kinda explain why she doesn't like using the book?

@mohamedo_abuduru as that is cut content in the anime, could that potentially be a retcon?

I find her having all this power to be kinda overpowered, and despite it she still died, unless she was just ignoring the book even when her life was on the line.

Well not entirely because although we are told echidna died by the witch of greed we dont actually know a lot about echidna and you learn more later. Its more the mystery of her character. Side note she genuinely just wants as much knowledge as possible…if her death technically fell in line with her gaining more she would probably be fine with it

Those are mostly Tome of Wisdom recreation

Edit: Anime adapts LN, not WN, but anyway

The good question here is why Echidna having such a great resource wouldn't use it expeditiously.

Answers to that are mostly speculation for now, because information is clouded. Most people associated with Echidna are dead by now, and if we consider her a 4D chess player, there are characters like Pandora who are posed to be perfect counter to her Tome's predictions and her plans. It may be possible that even her death was important for whatever future goal she had. She did make a clone factory after all.

Now without speculation, and purely from what is thrown onto our face, Echidna apparently values people's feelings about events more than the events themselves. That is one of the reasons why she stressed on sharing Subaru's feelings as she uses his RbD for more knowledge. A good reason for this might be the fact that she herself, at least in the version we see in the Castle of Dreams, is someone who can't totally comprehend emotions. What seems to be empathy is just her being intelligent enough to psychologically recreate something similar.

Well, to put it VERY simply, Echidna hacked into Emilia’s brain and was just showing her her own memories. Echidna didn’t “see” the fight there or anything is how I see it

this was after Emilia left the area, so Emilia's brains couldn't have seen the event. but anyway time of wisdom has already explained that.

@RuneRem You can tag me regarding questions any time. Or I might miss some of those 😅

It's more of an artifact of sorts that is connected to the memory of the world. Think of it like reading the "ley lines". When it does depict the possible future, it is merely simulating it using past event information. Because history tends to repeat itself.

Now the original copies of the Tome are not exactly flawless, like Roswaal being confused by Otto's involvement. So it's difficult to ascertain if the Tome itself was absolutely perfect despite being something like a supercomputer of sorts.

As far as I am aware, the book of wisdom is a byproduct of her abilities as a witch, in that she didn't necessarily ask for it, it just exists. She doesn't like using it because it just inputs the information in her head, there is no process of learning she just "knows" the thing, which isn't particularly interesting. Imagine if you want to watch the Re Zero series, but instead you just automatically know everything that happens in it, as though you had already watched it before. That would be pretty boring, right?

It isn't being written by anyone.

It probably won't be retconned. From what Echidna says, she was killed by Volcanica. If we can imagine Subaru not being able to defeat Reinhard in a 1v1 even with infinite RBDs (confirmed by author), it's not hard to imagine all the knowledge of history wouldn't teach you how to defeat an insurmountable combatant on the first try.

Moreover, there's a reoccurring theme in Re:Zero of fatespinning - that is, being caught up in a very long, detailed plan that has already accounted for you. It's possible Echidna understood that she had been accounted for in someone else's plan, and resigned herself to being temporarily killed with plans to return when the planner did not expect it (also cut content there).

These are just some ideas based on what we've seen so far, but if you keep them in mind going forward you'll definitely see some payoffs.

@RuneRem It's not retconned, the author has basically the entire series planned out beforehand, so anything relating to the general overarching mystery (which echidna is strongly connected to) should be set in stone. we know next to nothing about the true circumstances of echidna's life and death, and it's likely she and the rest of the cast are involved in a grand web of complex scheming. In a series with time travel, reality manipulation, a bunch of different prophetic books, other prophetic methods, and all this ridiculous shit, it's much more likely echidna knew she would die the way she would and still let it happen that way because she knows things we don't. Also, it's worth noting that the echidna in the castle of dreams is stated to be a separate entity from the echidna we see in the tomb/roswaals flashback. There are other things that are more spoilery that I can't mention, but basically echidna is probably on some gigabrain 600iq plan shit

not a plot hole, just cut content, echidna authority, "tome of wisdom", allows her to see/know everything im the world, past, present and future. the authority is connected to her tomb and is how she
1.saw the fight of regulus vs petelguese.

2.saw garfield mom landslide even though it happened far from sanctuary.

3.could still regain her memories every time subaru used return by death.

4.could show emilia, the unthinkable future. i thinking is also connected to how she showed the unthinkable presents too, possibilities of what would happen in that worlds future.

the tomb also allows her to see your memories but only for the trials and memories needed for the trials, nothing more, she her self can't do that whenever she wants(its a tomb only thing), she doesn't use her authority much due to her personality of not only wanting knowledge but also experiencing the process, but the book makes it feels like you always knew the knowledge once you use it
