Knowing how notoriously bad the Japanese’s audience taste is I have to say it’s kind weird this series isn’t selling, right?

Maybe not everyone likes comedy and is looking for more serious titles. Maybe not enough ads. The main plot (romance and ball hunt) is a stretch with subplots that lead almost nowhere. Also it's Jump+ title, they are selling less (SxF and maybe Kaiju are exceptions). It's really hard to say about any specific reason. Dandadan is crowd pleaser but somehow remained overlooked

@Chevesus i googled more and volume 1 of dandadan actually sold 200k copies so thats a lot almost same high as spy x family and kaiju 8 but it failed to maintain the sales in succeeding volumes heck there still no anime boost still especially there is no japan reprints for the volumes yet so ye its a mystery why this series is being overlook there

@deg There was a lot of promotion for vol 1. Video on youtube with author, manga ads. After that - not so much. It's not HUGE title in Japan as far as i know.
Now it has some boost from the anime, I read about 500k in October. If after the last Ep there will be no sudden increase in popularity, guess, DDD will have average sales for anime with adaptation, around 150k-200k in the first week for volume.

It seems that some people think Dandadan is not worth reading, so opinions are divided. I don't read the manga, but I like the anime.

@GinIonSui thanks for those links

so some hate from japan includes

>“Dandadan” has a diversity of themes that is appealing, but some readers feel it lacks cohesion.

>The frequent insertion of gags and crude jokes can be perceived as “offensive” by some readers.

>The stagnation of the story development in Dandadan

The series was #3 in the monthly Oricon charts for October with 560,000 sales, only beat out by One Piece and Jujutsu Kaisen. It was the best selling currently airing series for that month and will probably at least hold or may even go up this month with increased word of mouth, plus yesterday's episode has been trending on Japanese twitter for a whole day. It should also be noted that even with those 560,000 sales the entire series was free to read on Jump Plus for the month of October. So yeah its sales are not on the level of Demon Slayer or JJK, at least yet, but we don't have to concoct some bullshit narrative about it not selling, because it is.

@DenjiTakakura the point is japan is not as hype as western fans about it and i already get an answer with japan news links earlier on why they think its overrated

if episode 7 is indeed trending in japan then we will see if it will have the anime boost next week when the next manga sales report comes

hopefully it will finally have reprints too because reprints is a sign its selling well usually

Your post literally says why isn't Japan BUYING it more? I gave you the answer. But damn I guess your right the entire country of Japan thinks its overrated because of some machine translated tweets. Never mind the fact its the best selling current airing manga and will probably get a big boost in a few weeks due to how much episode 7 has been trending.

Because delinquent girls aren't popular much in japan probably. Old Japanese men just want kind-hearted and pleasant young girls to suck their dicks after a stressful day of wageslavery, they don't have time for obnoxious delinquent girls like the one in Dandadan.

Uhh, do you know, before a manga turn into anime, 4 million copies sell is a lot already?
Do you know even Jujutsu Kaisen only has 8 million copies sold prior to season 1 , and it's on Jump instead of Jump+

Dandandan seems to lack from what I've heard online (correct me if I'm wrong), an overarching goal ie op villain. Every shonen series has one so hype is hard to sustain. It doesn't cater to obsessed fans such as yuri and yaoi nor the casual family looking for their first manga as its themes are too dark. Its romance is too tepid, considering how well the MCs get along together so even that hype is weak.

I think it is in the unique position of being good, having a mish-mash of genres and themes but lacks both the ability to build hype (no OP enemy to overcome, no great goal, tepid romance) and fails to target the people who buy goods (yuri and yaoi fans, family people looking for their first manga).

@deg You're comparing the appeal of Dandadan to cookie cutter battle/nekketsu shounen for the japanese audience, laughable.

Acting like DDD is some innovative and original avant grande high brown under appreciated work of art and that’s why it’s not selling better as if Frieren and The Apocathery Diraies weren’t both on the Top 5 most sold manga of the year while being infinitely more subtle, complex and unique than DDD, DDD is another by the books action shonen with repetitive and basic characters (annoying ones at that), plot and themes that couldn’t even reach half the success of worse Shonen slop like Kaiju No.8 and Mashle while employing the same tired cliches that are supposed to guarantee success

I agree with what someone said in the thread you linked. The problem is the "monster of the week" episodic nature of the show that's it's downfall.

“not as hype as western fans”

It was the second most popular show on Netflix Japan last week. @DenjiTakakura gave you the numbers that show how well the JP manga is selling. Your evidence for its failure is a mtl of some guy’s blog. Every show will have its detractors. But unless you are using the unrealistic bar of Demon Slayer or JJK, the show is undeniably a commercial and popular success.
