Am I the only one that hates whenever the show is in dark places, like night forest, valleys or even dark poorly lit rooms? I know that it's supposed to be dark but man most of the time those scenes are unbearable, especially episodes 4&5. It's a real struggle to see anything in complete dark and it's completely unwatchable if there's any kind of other light in the room where you are watching the show.
Is it just me or they overdone it for the sake of some sort of "realism" or something else?

Also let me just say this before "poor monitor" and similar comments, this is the ONLY show that I had this problem with.

I agree they've overdone it for the sake of "realism". I have to watch this show in absolute dark and even then most of the time the only thing I can see are the subtitles, it is extremely annoying and unnecessary. I'm really interesed in the story, I would just love to be able to actually SEE IT.

I kinda have to agree that the dark scenes are a bit too dark. Raising the screen brightness kinda makes the white captions too bright and the contrast makes it hard to see overall

Yea, it is on the darker side, not unwatchable though.

Kind of think it works too, with what’s happening in the story and how everything being so dark it’s such a contrast to the starry sky

I haven't had any problems tbh, and I keep my phone on really low brightness all the time that even others say it's too dark and still I have not had any problems watching this

Don't want to watch it on phone, so I don't know, maybe then I wouldn't notice, but the show is too good to be watched like that. Phone is only for mindless slop like some seasonal isekai or something like that when on toilet.

I am used to this, thanks to certain games and some movies (hello, Zack Snyder!)

It's half intentional, I suppose, and tuned in a way for certain scenes to hit well.

Dark scenes is the reason why I hardly watch any TV shows other than animes. I feel there is always not enough light on screen.

However I didn't feel it that bad with Chi.

I get what you are trying to say but those scenes are few, and I agree, but what about many, many scenes where you can't see the sky? It just does a huge disservice to the anime and hinders the experience.

If you can't fix this with your media player options and controls, either your media player is crap, or you don't know how to use it.

I'd say that dark scenes are realistic and they were made on purpose.
Also skill issue.

Episodes 4&5 seem to have the darkest atmosphere, because:
1. It's a rainy night.
2. Sky is cloudy.
3. No light sources.

Giz, watch the anime in a dark room. Besides, when doing astronomy, you must not expose your eyes to the lights coming from your cellphone.

@logopolis

You wouldn't go to a theatre to watch a movie and yell at the guy in charge of the projector to crank up the brightness because some lame ass director thought it was a good idea to have pitch dark scenes where everything is just blurry blobs of darkness, would ya'?

Piss poor artistic choice is still a piss poor choice, specially when good directing is about letting the audience know what's happening using visuals.

You're right, but it's watchable on TV with lights off, still it's on the darker side. You can't see it nicely on your phone screen, even in Darkness, that was too hard to capture in lower Nits. I too had the same problem. That's kind of a drawback I would say.

the fact that people think you're gonna be constantly adjusting your settings to cater for everything you watch just shows how dumb anime fans can be for the glaze. it is unwatchable with default settings in a naturally-lit room during the daytime and i imagine in a well-lit room otherwise as well.

@ryzxgum

This, I can't even fathom some of the comments like "crap monitor or crap player". Just no, I bought good monitor with excellent specifics for color and brightness, and I didn't had issues with not one other show/game/movie for more than a year, with using MPC player that is probably the best player currently available to download on PC.
Also my room is constantly dark with all windows having full on blinds for majority of time. And this all with me excusing the scenes where they show stars because of the artistic vision, which is fine.

Having to "adjust" brightness every few minutes doesn't even help that much because it makes the dark scenes even worse. Adjusting brightness is such a ridiculous advice that it questions the iq of people who are suggesting it. And as some other comment said this artistic choice is piss poor and the director doing the show is awful at his job. Anyone who opened this manga at any time would see that everything is clearly visible and bright. While I do think that star scenes are vastly superior in the show in comparison, every other dark scene just completely overshadows everything else. Especially when the show is concentrated on astronomy and secrecy so one can assume that the plot will for the most part be happening in night or darkness.

I'm done with this thread, I expected a reasonable discussion, but like every time it just isn't possible with most of the anime fans without them being condescending or straight insulting to any criticism, even when it can literally be "seen", which is ironically the main problem of this show.

I watch the anime at night in a dark room on my tv, so it’s not so bad. I wouldn’t call it unwatchable. Just a slight inconvenience that’s easily solvable lol.
