I wanted to try reading Go Nagai's work, mainly the Devilman series first, so I've read both Maou Dante, Devilman and Shin Devilman. Both Maou Dante are really terrible but they're short so it was okay to read. Devilman was a bit more interesting but Shin Devilman was terrible too.
But on August last year I started reading Devilman Lady and I'm suffering. The chapters are so freaking long, each one is half a volume and they're really boring, the same devil of the week every time. And there's r*pe every single chapter, I don't actually care about the inclusion of it but it's very tiring.
Does it keep the formula of devil of the week or does it get better? I'm on chapter 10 right now (yeah, more than a year trying to read it and I've only read 9 chapters lmao). If it was short like Maou Dante it would be better to power through. I wanted to read everything related to Devilman so it would be a bit disappointing to drop or skip it, but is Devilman Lady worth it? Damn, is the rest of the series even worth it to read too?

Devilman Lady is one of Go Nagai's "envelope pushers" where he was pushing what he was allowed to publish at the time. beyond that, the series that fall under this umbrella don't stand up very well on their own. If you don't like it and aren't planning on writing a history paper about it, then don't read it.

Devilman lady came out in 1997, so it really wasn't pushing on what was allowed at the time. It was made as a true sequel to the original, thus Violence Jack became an alternative timeline sequel.

Nagai Go has his writing style. If @Kampos don't find it enjoyable no reason to bother reading on. Stick to the og and watch some of the OVAs or Crybaby if you want to see it again.

It does not get better. Trust me as someone whos read almost everything devilman related cause I'm weirdly obsessed with the original story even tho theres so many flaws even there. But Devilman Lady, Violence Jack, etc are all hot garbage and only ever get worse. I'm happy pretending they don't exist. But if you want a story without the rape try the Devilman Lady anime thats quite different and didn’t make me want to rip out all my hairs and throw up every second lmao. It wasn’t amazing or anything but better than anything in the manga at least..

Devilman lady is legitimately the worst thing I’ve read. (including non manga) its a continuous downward spiral and never gets good and you would be doing yourself a favor by not finishing it.
There is practically nothing in this manga i can point to and say i like, it is truly horrible.

Well, that's sad. I'll probably drop Devilman as a whole then, thanks for the replies

I enjoyed this tbh. Would say yeah if you like Nagai's art style and liked the original Devilman.

I actually think Devilman Lady gets worse after it breaks away from that formula.
You are more likely to enjoy the devil of the week formula in Violence Jack, since it is much closer to Devilman in style.

@Lucifrost I think I'll try reading Violence Jack and Guerrilla High before deciding if I'll drop the franchise

It does not get any better. If you don't like it already, save yourself some time and just drop it. Not worth it imo.

Got flaws
boring sometimes
I enjoyed it
There are too many rape scenes but it shouldn't bother you since it has gore n stuff(kinda similar to berserk in that aspect)
there are some scenes like she's fighting a weekly devil that feel like filler
it gets much better in the "Revival of the evil god" Arc(probably around chapters 17-30
Falls off again
And then gets better when Dante's journey in hell starts(probably 40 something) until the end of the manga
Ending was surprising but also felt lil bit rushed
