Kvin made an excellent blog article on Look Back. Check it out here:

https://blog.sakugabooru.com/2024/06/13/look-back-an-exceptional-production-to-embrace-the-paradox-of-the-artist-annecy-2024/

Key points from the article:

  • Gold purity analogy and how it applies to commercial art
  • Kiyotaka Oshiyama's track record (Space Dandy #18, Flip Flappers)
  • Oshiyama's desire to handle an incredibly large workload -> Studio Durian's founding
  • Oshiyama's approach to linework for Look Back
  • Adaptational choices for the Look Back movie

Quite interesting to read him solo carrying and being place in the studio for almost 3 months to put a very unique experience

I'm a little apprehensive about reading their review because the last time I read their stuff they were too busy looking for speculative evidence in the visuals for their headcanons. So, given the original manga's reputation within the fandom, I'm a little apprehensive about reading their review of a movie I haven't seen yet.

The author of this article (Kvin) is very well-connected to people in the anime industry which is why he can offer valuable information that is very difficult to find in mainstream outlets.

@LLBird I know who he is and have no doubt about his level as a specialist. But it still bothers me to remember how he downvote the second season of Hibike due to being more faithful to the text instead of yuri bait, or where he used Naoko Yamada's words taken out of context to argue what Yamada actually rejected, without wanting to influence people's perceptions. Don't get me wrong, we are all human and he has every right to his ships and his personal opinion in general. Like any person, regardless of knowledge and preferences. But I can't stand the fact that shipping has such a big impact on the evaluation of various media lately.

And while that's on the subject, I still remember how he was one of those people who criticized Bunny Senpai because of the poster and the idea, thinking that it would be primitive ecchi, but then praised the visual language of the show. And this mistake was made by a bunch of supposedly authoritative people among Western anime influencers.
