Curious if this is an adaptation, a sequel or a spinoff. I haven’t seen any of the previous shows so do you think I’d be okay watching this on its own, or having a go at the original first?

TIA!

It's a Remake; a complete re-start/new adaptation.

We don't know yet how it will be going.

Another work of the Author, Urusei Yatsura, recently received a Remake that only adapted the core Chapters, kinda like a Best-Of of the story. If it goes toward the same direction, it may be a good idea to watch the original (or read the Manga) at some point too.

It’s a remake. The original anime had a lot of filler episodes (anime original episodes of content that wasn’t in the manga). The first episode so far felt a lot like the original show. I would say probably give this a shot first and then try the original out after?

Yes, watch the original before this, you'll notice alot of changes, both good and bad (more good than anything ngl)

This anime is a remake (as other people said here), so there's no problem watching it even without seeing the original, I myself watched the original anime when I was a kid so I don't remember much, I just know that I really liked the comedy. I read the manga last year, which made me remember Ranma½ better. And now I'm here watching the remake as if I had never watched the old version, so I don't see any problems. Just watch and enjoy. If you really like it after a few episodes, try reading the manga or watching the old version.

Consider it kinda like what Dragon Ball Kai was to Dragon Ball Z.

As a viewer who never saw the original, I think it’s excellent fun and tells the story from a definite starting point. No confusion at all. And really good too!

Honestly nah. I watched the first 40 episodes, really enjoyed it, then learned of the remake and waited. You don’t have to, but there is something nostalgic about it, even though I was watching for the first time lol

No need to unless you want to compare the two. This is a total remake from the beginning, the story and scenes are pretty much the same.

Until now is (literally) the same anime with a new op and higher res.

So far so good!

skip0s out.

Hmmm I’d say the main upside to watching the original first is that once you’re done the new version would all be out on Netflix 🤷🏾‍♀️. I love the original version, the movies, and the OVA episodes. It’s all very nostalgic and gives you a different feel compare to the remake. I think you should give it a shot! Doesn’t matter which one you watch first bc it’s telling the same story.
