| I actually read this a while ago, but since there isn't any discussion thread yet, no harm in making one is there? To be blunt, the prologue feels like a paraphrase of how every other generic romcom light novel starts. It's basically the equivalent of "copying someone's homework without making it too obvious". Except that it is quite obvious here, to me at least. The prologue let me down, but the actual first chapter is miles better. Really fucking good, in fact. Barring their mediocre introduction, Alisa and Kuze have truly amazing chemistry. You know when you are reading a conversation of two fictional characters and suddenly find yourself already engrossed in it? All of their conversations have felt like that to me. Cute, witty, lively, and occasionally a bit romantic. The Russian thing is honestly kinda stupid, ultimately isn't much relevant to the plot, if at all (it doesn't seem like that so far, at least). I guess like a lot of other light novels, the author just wanted to have a gimmick. Another concern I have is the possibility of the romance being stagnant, or simply not progressing at all, which I hope won't be the case. I'm loving this atm. Momoco's art slaps btw. She's definitely nowhere near as outstanding with monochrome art, but still not bad at all. Alisa looks gorgeous in almost every artwork. | My biggest surprise with volume 1, which is the first real in-depth contact with the series, since I started reading this after ep1 came out (and only saw glances of other people commenting on the highlights of it), is that the MC, Masachika is a much more enjoyable character than I expected. You dont give much for him at the start, just another generic MC. Still, then you see his interactions with Alya, and the peeks at his past, and his relation with Yuki, and I grew fond of him very quickly! Alya I already expected to like, but I was thinking Yuki would be the third wheel, someone that would only "cockblock" what I wanted to see, the MC getting along with Alya, yet Yuki is pure win and best wingman (despite she being a devil in some parts of the books later on), the plot twist that she was his sister worked WONDERFULLY. I have never seen a plot twist like this and in such a context working this well for what I what were my expectations of I dont want to see this character competing with Alya for the MC, to now, YES give me more Yuki. Again in later volumes, this comes to bite me in the ass cuz she definitely plains a villain role sometimes (and she even jokes about it), but she mostly just adds to the experience, everything plays so wonderfully in what the series is going for with the character development to Masachika and his family situation, it is something I was not expecting from this read, I mostly expected drama surrounding Alya, and this makes it all the much better. Yuki is that rascal little sister you just can't NOT love, her way of supporting her brother genuinely warms my heart many times even across later volumes. (I have just finished vol.05) Masachika texting with his sister is very amusing, I just cant get enough of their references and jokes about all the tropes from the anime/manga/LN/VN industry nowadays. From what I saw from the anime thought, the MC putting the sock on Alya's feet works a bit better there, since the anime is doing a wonderful job adapting, with generous fanservice and budget, and of course, Alya's display of emotions coming rather well. (the clothes she decided to try when she went shop hunting looked way worse on the anime than I expected, so a funny downgrade there, just compare the illustration of this volume to the anime equivalent) Also, it feels like the writer is not trying to hide that Masha has a big role in the MC past, just saying, that the anime leaves it even more clear, but so much foreshadowing already in the LN (and Masha looks way better in the LN than the anime sadly, her face looks way more generic in the anime). I dont want to comment much about Alya x Masachika since I have mostly forgotten about some details, and their relationship changes a lot more through the volumes I dont want to spoil what I recently read, I will just say that it fell under what I was expecting, with the russian gimmick working really well. Alya herself is what you could call a modern tsundere, since has all the right traits of it, while never being annoying at all, she shows us her tsuntsun side, but then with Russian shows her inner thoughts, and she many times will act accordingly so, not acting like a generic tsundere character, she can be reasonable, affectable and daring to rile up Masachika, and it works so well. She is the ultimate trope evolution that tsunderes needed, SOPHISTICATED tsundere. This is the writer's first major work, yet he avoids many pitfalls with his take on the setting, thus for a romcom, this is truly more refreshing than most, and surprises with a much deeper thought to the characters, outside the female protagonist, than one expected. Something I dont like about the whole series, the last illustration of most volumes likes to end with a character saying something in Russian and then there is no translation for it, and at least a few times it was NOT mentioned at the start of the next volume, what that meant, and since this is using Russian characters, I cant really translate it easily copying to google translator, thank god for ChatGPT 4.0 for this lol. |

I saw all but the last episode of the anime, which will be out tomorrow morning my time, and these chapters are really adding to the experience! Of course I know that the anime was just an adaptation of this, but since I did see the anime first, that’s the perspective that I’m coming from.
And a sidenote, it was nice to see that Alya was apparently skipping down the hallway, after Masachika said the two of them were friends. Really added a nice little bit to their whole dynamic.

One of them being that Alya's panties were pink, not white - which you've already read. And that chase scene never took place. The LN was better. Anyways, I won't be delving any further.
As a fellow LN reader, all I can say is, you're in for a joyous ride. You're gonna love what's to come. Especially the omitted ones. And when you get to V4 and V6, you will have reached the apex of enjoyment. 10/10 volumes, these two. Yet to be adapted in the anime series. Will be adapted in the next season.

An excerpt in ch6 when he thought of the girl he liked as a little kid, yet, (gasp!) he couldn't remember her name or what she looked like: I really was my mother’s son. I was a heartless person. I so easily forgot someone I once claimed to love so much. Something cold began to fill my chest. Yeah, and I can understand why. But the main part of that post that I made, was the fact that he was so self depreciating! I mean, I’ve seen some anime where they are self depreciating, and I’ve seen some anime where a character or two, was extremely depreciating of other people! Like Internet trolling in person bad! Rascal Does Not Dream (the LN’s at least) featured a whole bunch of both actually! I mean, since I saw the anime, I put up with it because it wasn’t that often. But then it became more often, and I just got so sick of it that I decided to drop it. And the one where I decide to drop it at, actually had the main guy in the hospital, and his girlfriend be extremely nasty toward him! Just for having to go to the hospital! Yeah, that’s what I’m talking about! I mean, it’s bad enough that we have to go through a whole bunch of really hard stuff in real life, but to come home and to have to see or read stuff like this is extremely discouraging! It compounds the frustration and stress that we experience in our daily lives! I mean, yes, most anime aren’t like that, but I’ve come across too many animes, LN’s and the like that are in fact like that! (on one level or another) And at first, I thought Roshidere wasn’t going to be like that. I’m sure that it’s not (overall), but after that scene, I’m sure you can understand why I need to take a break right now considering that it had a scene like that. I do not want to be reminded of those very same things I’m trying to get away from, especially in my free time! |
