Can someone explain why they call it a Key Visual?

It’s somewhat familiar seeing people say it relates to the anime visuals in some way, but I just want to get a clear idea of what it is used for.

Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

They are mostly promotional visual made to promote an anime, an arc or a character.

Just consider that official pictures of scenes you won't see in the anime are key visuals

In a broader sense key visual is a graphic mean of communication supposed to deliver a message from a company, association, organisation to their consumers / audience

By this point I think it's pretty safe to say that a second season is deffinetly happening. It's generating some serious thrust.
