I don’t think Asper Kanojo portrays anything that is triggering on a mass scale (except the dog kicking part goddamn 😩) and I think a lot of them would appreciate being represented through neurodivergent characters. |

There’s a saying in the community that goes “if you know one autistic person, then you know one autistic person.” Because neurodivergent people are on a huge spectrum and every individual has different needs. The main character in Asper Kanojo is a bit violent i feel like some people would take offense to that. Not all autistic people are violent and they might not want a portrayal like that in media. This is just an overall issue with autism and media unfortunately. |
The part of the dog definitively will trigger people in the West, and I'm afraid that if it became adapted, neurotypical people, especially those that don't know much about ASD, would make a bad image of what Autism/Asperger's is. I’m an Aspie. I would like to see this manga adapted into anime. I don’t watch or read media (movies, series, non-scientific books) related to autism, but this manga is the first that makes me feel identified with the main character. Most of the other media, like Good Doctor, Move to Heaven, or Attorney Woo, display autistic characters with super-powers (savant syndrome, a super memory, etcetera), while others show more stereotypical cases like Sheldon Cooper and even worse, Raymond Babit. Not all ASD cases are like that, just a few. Asper Girl displays a more realistic case of autism for those in the high-functioning end of the spectrum —I know how harmful function tags are, but I think I should be clear in my comment. I don't want to argue it. Her way of being is influenced by all the bullying she received in high school. From my point of view, it's not a happy story like many others with characters on the spectrum, so maybe this won't make it popular. I didn't receive the same kind of bullying as her when I was in school, but for the rest, I feel represented by her, and I don't doubt that many others on the spectrum will. |
