Just to make clear why this episode might feel 'filler' despite its own value.
It is all about the end of the previous episode. With huge cliffhanger on Aqua performance. And delaying resolution of the said cliffhanger feels very bad.
Manga readers do not feel it cause they know the script but for anime-only viewers it matters.
If only studio moved this Aqua segment closer to actual resolution it would be so much better.
I would actually watch this episode instead of checking progress and duration and wandering whether we will get some Aqua-time or not.

Absolutely beautiful episode. I haven’t seen an episode with direction and anime-only add ins as good as this since 86. They somehow managed to make an often forgotten side character’s arc feel like a main character’s climax. Spectacular work. Having depth in your characters and storytelling like this is what separates a show from the rest of the pack.

Speaking of storytelling, I feel like some people complaining about the screen time Melt had are misunderstanding a key part of the series. Sure, the main characters are obviously a highlight of the anime, and the plot to find Aqua’s father is important, but the real depth and beauty of this anime shines through the hardships and appreciations of the entertainment industry. Melt’s character arc is a catalyst for showcasing the wild roller coaster that is entertainment. Watching his struggles for two seasons and how it affects everything around him was very realistic. In reality, one person can ruin an entire body of work. This show reminds us of that constantly. But in the face of this reality, choosing to stand your ground and make yourself shine when it matters the most is what Melt learns and strives towards. And that is a wonderful takeaway from any form of media, let alone an anime.

The rest of the characters will get their chance to shine as well, I’m sure. But for now, I have nothing but respect for the entire Oshi no Ko staff for putting their blood sweat and tears into the making of this beautifully created and carefully developed episode and series. And LETS GOOOOO MELT

Anime often falters based on its plot, but regarding this arc, you can't really ask for more. I think it is delivering exactly what this second season claims to be. Based on that, it's a good episode and a good development for a secondary character.

The 2.5D stage play was too good to be contained in just one episode.

I really did not expect that the animators going all out with that sakuga just for Melt's part in the play. I sincerely hope the animators can sustain the momentum with the rest of the play. Looking forward to Aqua's performance and the inevitable Kana vs Akane stage duel.

The play is here at long last, I’m happy to finally see what these 2.5D plays are like, and so far it’s been quite cool, the way the giant screens react to the actors is sick looking. And it’s also awesome to see the actors in character, Kana has been killing it so far along with Himekawa, their opening fight scene was very cool as well. I also like that we’re getting to see some audience reactions, this way we’re getting every angle of this play, and it played a great role in making the last moments of this episode amazing.

That’s right, our boy Melt came through, his backstory may have hurt the flow of the play but I liked the placement, it really enhanced his big moment to show everyone what he’s made of, he shook not just Abiko, but the Sweet Today mangaka (hate that I can’t remember her name lol), I’m happy to see him turn things around. And I can’t forget to mention the beautiful art and animation during that scene, Doga Kobo is cooking with four ovens right now lol, glad to see this play arc is getting the deluxe treatment, it’s nice to hear manga readers are very happy as well. And to think we haven’t even seen Akane or Kana have a big moment yet, definitely looking forward to how the rest of the play goes.

Not totally excited about an episode dedicated to a side character with tons of flashbacks, I really have no idea why anime is obsessed with flashbacks just shoved in there but in literature it's rarely used, and for a reason. It sucks. Anyways, I did like the guy and I liked the play but this is kind of dragging in my opinion. We're still nowhere near the killer of Ai after 18 episodes.

Such an incredible payoff for all the build-up to the performance! Even in the episode itself, layers were still being added to an already satisfyingly complex web of plot points and character dynamics. In yet another episode, the mangaka and adaptation team keep delivering insightful commentary on relationships and emotion through an intense look at the behind the scenes of creating these productions. Oshi no Ko is truly one of the most enthralling pieces of fiction I've had the honor of viewing.

Reply to Alfredo-Sauce
While the episode overall was well done I thought spending the entire time on the play itself and on the purple haired guy, Melt, was a bit too excessive as we got virtually nothing on Aqua, Akane, and other main characters. On a side note, the 2.5D environment does look incredible.
@Alfredo-Sauce we have a whole seven episodes to get there. I was actually invested in his character arc so this episode made me extremely happy. Don’t get me wrong. I love a lot of the characters in this show, but it’s OK to focus on one at a time. The story is not in a rush and that’s OK. I would rather them take their time than them rush it and give us a shit story.

I absolutely love this episode, easily my favorite episode that we’ve gotten animated so far besides season one episode one. This episode literally had me crying. I literally jump up out of my chair out of joy because of melts character arc. I understand him so much and as a manga reader, I was really upset when they didn’t dive more into his character so this just made me super happy and excited. I love how they’re pacing this season as well and I can’t wait till Aqua’s moment to shine. The animation was absolutely stunning as well, especially those end sequences, gorgeous.

The end of act 1 / beginning of Act 2 music that started playing was definitely a Ghost in the Shell SAC vibe

That episode was great. And the visuals...... especially at the end.

Incredible, what a great episode with excellent character development and an outstanding soundtrack. I really thought they were going to focus more on the story of the play, but seeing how they transitioned from a POV shot of the theater balcony to the background of the actors was incredible, and what better way to start than with the weakest link...

I don’t know what his senpai did to him in that encounter, but it couldn’t have been anything decent to leave him staring into space. But that was the beginning of Narushima’s great ego on a path few have the privilege of treading. Being someone attractive, many doors opened for him without him making the slightest effort, but that was just the start. When he hit a wall, instead of putting in the effort to overcome it, he did the bare minimum, which led to him ruining an opportunity that many would kill for. From there, he had two paths to choose from: settle with what he had and continue in his small world or expand to new horizons and grow as an artist...

That hand is not of someone who chooses the easy path; it’s clear he gave everything to meet expectations, and Yoriko's tears are proof that he is not a mediocre actor. AHHH, I’m excited to see how the other performances and backstories of the others will be.

Man, I legitimately did not even remember this dude (every episode this season when I see him I go "who? Oh right") but by the end they legit made me tear up and root so hard for him.

Great stuff. Surprised they actually gave a whole episode to this, and I do miss seeing more of Aqua and Akane especially, but ultimately Oshi no Ko is at its best when it unflinchingly looks at the realities of the entertainment business, and the fact that the resolution to the purple haired guy being a bad actor was not magic or the power of friendship or magic training and hard work, but a very realistic manipulation of sentiment (a trick this show itself has pulled multiple times across two seasons, by the way) made it feel that much more authentic, and the win that much more earned.

Good episode. Very interested to see where the next one goes, because based on where the previous one ended, I absolutely would not in a million years have guessed this would be the follow up lol.

Wow, just wow. Was not expecting this one to be so good, especially considering it is not about Aqua or Arima or Akane. They showed how he approached the character, drawing a parallel to his own struggling situation in real life. The change in animations and viewpoints were nicely done to bring out the emotions in the audience both in the anime and in real life. Solid 10/10 episode.
