I thought the revenge story would be good but it became some kind of boring slice of life type mess. Then the annoying, overpowered samurai girl became the main character. The only good episode was when he took revenge. The rest was garbage.

Wistoria feels like a much more fun series set in a Hogwarts-like school. Not sure if you’re watching that yet but give it a chance

Anyway, I agree that the annoying side characters who took a major role over Oliver and his revenge story killed the series for me.

While it wasn’t amazing, I enjoyed the anime for the most part.

Revenge is the not the main focus of the story.

The anime did not cover much as compared to the light novels. As seen in the anime, it focuses more on selling light novels and those Nanao merchandise.

As mentioned in Alderamin Volume 14 afterword, the author mentioned that the story is about humans.

In volume 10, the light novels will mention how humans change quickly, such as Katie personality completely changing from an innocent girl to willingly working of human experiments (attaching eyes to back on humans), that Oliver cult consider recruiting Katie to go after their next targets due to her being consumed by the spell. Or Oliver becoming a psychopath due to his great-grandfather brainwashing him.

To OP: Nanao is not the most powerful character of their year. Chela is the strongest, that his father Theodore has to forbid her from using her full powers.

If you like revenge story, go read Seirei Gensouki or something else~

So, just cause Harry potter is so famous, every magical school story is Harry potter now? You gonna read a 70's magical school story and call it Harry potter copy too? It's annoying how one can't make a magical school story without people saying "oh it's just bad Harry potter" or "it's just another Harry potter copy", like it is the only magical school story ever

Now that the rant's out of the way, as the other guy said, it was a pretty good concept, but not as good of execution, I would have to say especially in the characters department

It’s just that Harry Potter is such a huge franchise so stuff like this has become synonymous with it

This anime started off fine, with a couple of episodes that were alright.

However “Spellblades” got lost in all the side stories, background revenge story, and a random surprise kidnapping that was way off the main storyline. It tried to do way too much, in too little time.

“Spellblades” is more of a Harry Potter inspired anime than Wistoria, which basically has a loner non-magical warrior character trying to rise above, with a large amount of resistance from those at the magical school.

Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

I think that the main male character was trying to keep a low profile in the magical school, so having a majorly talented samurai character to take attention off of him, actually served his purpose of not standing out.

I do not understand why you had to spoil a lot of the future plot points just to get your point across.. From what we've seen so far in the anime it has been very basic with no uniqueness to the story or characters. It was indeed a very bad experience personally but I suppose it was just not my cup of tea.

the main problem of this show is the second half s pacing and nothing really happens. Rescuing their genderfluid friend takes way too long

I still prefer taking time to flesh out things (even if it leads nowhere because it's an incomplete adaptation) over resorting to a MC that is apparently the weakest, but actually he's... le strongest for instant gratification like MIDstoria.

@Nirinbo

This show had that to a ridiculous degree. Nanao can defeat everything and has out of nowhere developed a rare magical unstoppable technique while not knowing magic. Not to mention

@xsilicon9 1) Nanao and Oliver aren't supposed to be underdogs.

2) Nanao making up for her poor magic skills with swordsmanship is ONE trait of ONE character that is part of a bigger picture, not the entire premise of the story.

The issue is Nanao herself. She is unbearable to watch at times
