It's almost as if the artists thought to themselves "we need MORE GRAINS" if you compare it to the first season. Season 2 looks rough as hell and feels almost as if the film grain was used as an excuse to hide imperfections. Moderate, sure, but this is surely way too much? Even facial expressions from the characters look dull when the minute details in body language can't be shown effectively, lacking focus in a lot of moments. So what's up with this design choice???

Watch basically any scene from the entire season and you’ll notice it. I adored this season, and basically ignored the grain, but I always wondered what the purpose of it was, or where in the production process it came from.

It’s been there from the beginning of S1 you may just have not noticed it before because you watched those early parts from a low quality source.

S1 animation is miles better than s2 animation if i remember correctly, both have grains but in s2 there's so much more.

It's the same as season 1, it's just more noticeable due to the drop in animation quality.

I'm pretty sure that the film grain you are refering to is actually illusion caused by slightly thicker outlines with different colour we usually have.

Probably just going for a 'cinematic' look. This is usually done just as a stylistic preference. On the technical side, grain/noise helps with eliminating compression artifacts from streaming renders, especially something called "banding" on gradients, but I doubt that was the main reason for it.

Audiences subconsciously associate a few things with the cinema look: grain, 24fps with a certain amount of motion blur (180°shutter angle), a very specific color grading scheme (dynamic range and LUTs), widescreen aspect ratio (closer to 1.85:1 than the usual 16:9), among others. I deal with this all the time as someone who works on media post production.

Most creatives who insist on utilizing them just like the look, while a few others just want to artificially boost the cinematic appeal of the final product.

Since this is animation in the digital age, none of these are inherently present during the production process (except aspect ratio, which has to be decided beforehand), so they had to be emulated during post. Simply put, someone with a high position in the team (very likely the director) really likes the look and insisted they used it, so they did. That's what it usually comes down to in these situations.

I think the grain is just an aesthetic choice to emphasize the fantasy setting. Whenever it cuts to rudy's previous life the film grain is gone

It’s always been there, and I don’t think it’s gotten worse. Show some proof to back up your claim

It's just the art style ig, I like it though, it's unique and kinda fits the fantasy aesthetic.

I agree with only grain point but there is one point of my own that is lag of Frame between Season 2 Part 2 episode 1 to 6 and Background are not clear as previous part but it is okay because the story is masterpiece and Episode 8 to Episode 12 animation is became good and I am not hater of this series in fact I am a fan of this series

episode 13 of season 2 has a lot of grain, but other than that, it's not really noticeable
