----------------------------------------
There is something about Miya that is just extremely menacing. I think it's the way the director often depicts her in Shadows and how manipulative she seems to be. Her assertion that she likes that Nanako is is submissive is a highlight of her biggest character flaw, she's just not proactive enough. In fact, Nanako comparing herself to Mariko and her assertiveness with Kaoru sort of gives me the feeling that our protagonist will try and make a change.

The scene with the cigarette deserves mention as well. When you are a young person particularly in your teens and around many people that are as influential Miya, Kaoru, and Rei it's easy to see how Nanako would try and find a way to close the distance she feels is between herself and her crush. The thing is that you lose part of yourself when you do something like this. I know that sounds melodramatic, but I think that cigarette represented Nanako almost throwing something of herself away in order to maybe conform to others.

I was pleasantly surprised that Rei threw her drugs away. Hopefully she can make a turn around.

That Miyaaa.. seriously kill the b*** !
other than that, I really hope Nanako doesn't end up with Rei or something.. I would totaly hate this anime if that's the case.. I'm barely putting up with Mariko liking Kauro.
Also I was so glad Rei didn't take the drugs..

She almost lit Rei's cigarette!

I prefer Kaoru/Rei over Mariko/Kaoru and Rei/Nanako tbh.

Miya is such a bitch though

Oh my.

I'm so amused that this statement can actually apply to Miya as well.

Why does it have to be Rei of all people!? Why couldn't it be Tomoko or maybe Kaoru? What does Nanako see in her anyways!? Also Mariko is being a bit too annoying about her love for Kaoru.

*Yuri-ness intensifies* Bit sad (and annoying) Mariko has such a view on males but also understandable seeing that her own cheating erotic writing dad is like that. I'm really curious to what the deal is with Miya and why she's so controlling over Rei and even Nanako.

Yeesh! Fukiko is just so obsessively controlling, she really has no right to act the way she does. But who am I kidding, pretty much everyone in this show is abnormal in some way...

Most of the characters turned into complete nutjobs. Well, some were from the very beginning.

But I kind of dislike where the storytelling is going.

Fukiko asks Nanako if she has a boyfriend. Instead of simply saying "no", which would be the truth, she tells her that she has a male penpal.
Fukiko control mania instantly kicks in and she tells Nanako to stop writing him.

Then Nanako brings a letter addressed to Henmi to school, because she couldn't simply wait to send it after school.
And guess who finds that letter? Oh, what a coincidence!

At that point Nanako should seen how crazy Fukiko and Mariko are and leave the Sorority. but of course, she won't do that. She tends to do some really stupid stuff.

Aww Nanako is in love, a shame she's in the middle of the mess that is Miya wanting to control her and Rei.

It felt so good seeing Rei just getting ready for another day until Miya came in.

It was so contrived and annoying that Nanako had to bring the letter to school so Miya could find her.

Mariko, you need help.

My "theories" on some of the characters so far:

Miya-sama seems to enjoy seeing Rei being miserable and looks very pleased to be in control of her and affect her mental state so greatly. I think Miya-sama is holding a huge grudge towards Rei yet deep down she also feels a twisted need to be needed by Rei and not to be live without. Like how she said she is the only person who'll ever understand Rei. She wants Rei to be solely reliant on her, only to abuse that reliance to feed her own power trip fantasy (XD), and maybe to deny her need to feel needed by Rei as well?
Whatever more happened in their past though, Miya-sama has clearly not gotten over from (Rei haven't either :D). Like how she still continues to play the same piano piece as Rei, and is so fixated on being mean towards her.

Mariko seems to put her whole being into love and seems to harbor some very strong feelings towards the people she has an interest in. She seems to get invested in people quite fast as well as she and Kaoru-no-kimi have only had few interactions (What we, as watchers, are shown to at least) before, and now she is in love already? That escalated fast. Mariko also seems to get possessive over the people she cares about, just like we saw in the beginning during the "friendship triangle" era.
Her moods also tend to shift quickly. Like how fast she switched from being hurt by Kaoru-no-kimi not showing as much concern about her as she'd like, to her getting all giddy after being called "Mariko" by Kaoru-no-kimi for the first time. Though it's always possible Mariko was playfully pretending to feel hurt, perception matters after all!
Mariko also seems to build quickly a strong impression of others as well. Like how she loathed Tomoko in the beginning, despite never having talked to her before, and how quickly she got attached to Nanako, a total stranger to her. I think Mariko may suffer from abandonment issues as well, as seen how she completely went haywire after Nanako tried to leave her house. Maybe her distant relationship with her dad as well as the fact she has never had any friends before, have made her determined to keep the few people around her at all costs?
Mariko's behaviour reminds me a bit about BPD honestly. Either that or inexperience with friendships. xp

About the episode as a whole, I feel very proud about Rei holding her ground and not convincing herself she didn't enjoy playing basketball, despite Miya-sama's attempts at manipulation! ^w^ Good for her to withhold from taking pills either. Though I'm positive what we are seeing now, is just a momentary phase, and something tragic will await Rei in the episodes to come. T_T
Looking very forward to see more of Miya-sama as well! Why she seems to favor Nanako so much in the first place? ?_? You'd think there are far more people in the school willing to submit to Miya-sama, as she is the leader of Sorority. Nanako surely has a rotten luck though, having her letter be discovered by Miya of all people. xp

It's a shame that the user above was removed, because I do like their overall assessment of the episode.

Mariko is something that's very wishy washy in extremes. She feels strongly for people and is able to change super fast. A lot of people here are confused by her, but I've seen people like Mariko in real life. My older sister's friend was exactly like that. She'd make friends easily, and then fall out with those people, and then make back up, rinse and repeat. People like Mariko exist. She falls in love fast, and her moods are extreme. Like her feeling extremely disappointed when Kaoru had to spend her lunch talking with her coach, and then doing a 180 when Kaoru called her by her first name. Mariko falls fast and hard, and we've known that from the first episode. She immediately liked Nanako and really wanted to be her friend.

This anime is not ideal for the slow burn lovers. Nanako and Mariko seem to fall in love relatively fast tbh. Nanako is already in love with Rei, and she's only really interacted with her a few times.

Heck, even Miya seems to have fallen fast and hard for Nanako.

Rei still seems to be staying away from drugs, which is great. It seems that Nanako is attracted to Rei.

Miya is pure evil. She must be stopped.

At this point I can't hope for any redemption of Miya, she's just a bully. Whatever explanation there is for her behaviour, it isn't right, she's clearly messed up in the head and all she does is messing with others for her own messed up satisfaction.

So proud of Rei for standing up to temptation. I'm liking her more and more with each episode. And apparently it wasn't just my imagination that something is going on with Nanako's feeling too. Really curious how it will all play out in the end.

i was afraid Rei will pull a 180° after that match, but she's doing pretty good - she didn't end up convincing herself she didn't like the match and even threw the drugs away - which is great to see! Rei miserable era over (for now)???

Miya is creepy by herself but with these giant shadows that cover her face, it feels like i'm watching a horror... i wonder if there's a limit for her manipulation

The cigarette strikes again. First gazing at it lovingly, now trying to, well, try it. this is so gay lol. i don't think Nanako was trying to start smoking to be closer to Rei, as some teens do to be one of 'cool kids'. rather, she was going for an inderict kiss ('kansetsu kiss' - a thing in japanese romances) because she's in love and kinda pathetic (we still stan)

Mariko is an icon <3
