Thinking back to the beginning and fully realizing the reason why Nozomi didn't want to get involved in all this was because it meant her mother would still be around and what that means for her is truly depressing, and the way we see her internalize all of that in the subsequent episodes makes it seem much more serious than just some running gag about her place in the home. Say what you want about her family situation, and the way they tried to make her sympathetic in 11.5, but Seiko is a vile human being. Every time they juxtaposed her doing absolute shit with Nozomi doing housework...fucking hell, especially when she was preparing a birthday dinner for her. The character description here on MAL says that Seiko "can sometimes be very selfish." There's something wrong with that description.

In the end, I think the family is just as fragile as before. Expected some sort of wake up call for Seiko, and it was there, just a very small one with Dai. Dai himself proved to be very sensitive about things involving his mother, despite him coming across initially as too carefree to give a crap about what was going on. Didn't even want to mention Mamoru finding out about being NTR'd through visions in a toilet bowl, but how can you forget something like that?

This show looked great and I enjoyed it, there's something about these early 2000s comedies that seem so fresh and creative. You don't see young protags like Dai in a lot of anime anymore, especially not with such a mix of juvenile and dark humor. And maybe because they didn't pull any punches and rush in some happy-ending in the last episode, it all felt a little too real. One review on here mentions that despite everything 'they still care for each other.' I don't know, that might be a little too optimistic for this series, but I liked how subtle it was and left open what further adventures might mean for them as a group. A very unique, but dysfunctional, experience.

Giant Naked Ellen...that was someone's fetish...maybe mine too...

I feel this anime needed another 13 episodes to brings its dramatic issues to a conclusion; ending at this point feels like a step in the right direction, but the work is unfinished. The relationship between Dai and Seiko, and to a lesser extent Mamoru, has been the dramatic core of this anime, beginning with the episode about Weird, leaving a resolution of Nozomi's unhealthy relationship with Seiko and the males neglected by the end of the anime. Nozomi's moments of despair, rage, and angst all happen in in the first half, and episode 9 doesn't address the problems of her family dynamic.

Seiko is how to make you kids hate you for life 101. Seiko plays the role of a swaggering patriarch, refusing to help around the house (and neither will Mamoru and Dai), turning complaints against her around with verbal abuse and physical violence. She reliably breaks every promise she makes, and hypocritically forces her will on others, and always manages to get her way with loud yelling. Keeping with Japanese tradition, Seiko's only soft spot seems to be for her son, and Seiko and Dai probably have the closest relationship throughout the anime. It says something about the stew of negativity in the Daichi family that the one scrap of tenderness given in these last two episodes is something I''ll gladly take. At least Hayakawa seems like a pretty decent guy, so at least she picked out a good person to potentially have an affair with.

So if Seiko is the father, and Nozomi is the mother, where does that leave Mamoru? The Shinji, maybe? Despite furtive attempts a possible affair of his own with Dai's flaky teacher, he blows it. Probably since it was all one-sided... Ultimately Mamoru remains the indecisive otaku he was at the beginning, and if anything is actually much worse off than in the first episode, when the Defense Family seemed to give him a sense of purpose.

Overall, this is really nice character study anime. The characters feel real, and their motivations and behavior are consistent and drive the story. The use of body humor really works in this anime as well, part and parcel of the rough sensibilities of a juvenile male, but one can't help but feel there is a sense of justice whenever Seiko is peed on. The OP led me to believe there would be considerably more ecchi than there was, but I was amused by the more frequent male nudity- shota peener and obese buttcrack- rather than female nudity.

Seeing the final kaiju on Dream Island tangentially reminded me of Paranoia Agent (through Dream Island Obsessional Park, ofc) another character-study anime. Off the top of my head, I think the characterization in Daichis is better than Paranoia Agent, which seems cold in my off-the cuff recollection. I think this is a really underrated anime. My personal willingness to watch was lowered a bit by the fact that nearly every character is unlikable at times, but rather than a 6 I think the MAL score should be in the 8 range. This is real art.

Well I already that the series wasn't a hit in Japan so they had to cut the content and went with 1 cour anime instead of long run which was initially planned but still the show's writing was really one of the experiences for sure overall a very good series without any dissapointing factor as 1 cour anime.
Still I wish it's atleast 2 cour then it will one of the best series.
