The exploration of master and slave morality was done really well. We saw the follies of both Christianity and Paganism, and it wasn't preaching either but instead showing how both are complicated and multifaceted, each with their own strengths and serious problems. The massacare scene was horrfiying, sickening, chilling and harrowing, and the ginger girl's quest for spiritual closure amidst this horror was a good addition to this episode. The animation and art was beautiful too.

After a bunch of episodes painting Askeladd as a cool warrior future king leader dude, this was such a brutal reminder about the reality of him and this period of history. The father being told he won't need to worry about surviving through any more winters was haunting.

Wow, this episode was amazing. Really shows how helpless the villagers were as well as a deeper look into religion as a whole, and the fact that in the grand scheme of things it didn't change the harsh reality. Askeladd really is a brutal character as well. Damn, this was a great episode

One of the best anime episodes ever, I just can't synthesize why it's so genius in a little comment on a MAL discussion forum page, but this is already one of my favorite anime eps ever.

Even angels are punished for breaking the rules . Brotherhood. Perfect love. A true warrior has no need for a sword. A blizzard at the beginning of winter. Plunder is tradition for them. They are judging just as the one they believe in. She broke the rules. I guess this is a story set in ancient times thus they don’t have access to the extreme advanced technology of translating the words on the screen when making a literal dub in the modern day. All are killed in cold. Did God really watch that happen? Her fingers. Possibly the atrocity convinced her? A simple lesson from God in belief. 4
