A pretty ambiguous ending, although it seems Oribe did survive and go on to create some more 'comical' art.

Overall, this was a pretty interesting take on the end of the Sengoku period. I'll admit, this manga made me do a lot of background reading (mostly just trawling through Wikipedia pages) but still, it was definitely an interesting way to learn more about this period of history.

I will admit, that much like Ieyasu, I failed to appreciate aesthetics, which makes this manga a little bit tedious for me. I thoroughly enjoyed the political machinations and intrigues that the manga presented but seeing as so much of this manga's story is presented through the lens of the Tea ceremony and its intricacies, it did become difficult to enjoy it. Also, doesn't help that Oribe isn't exactly the most interesting or likable main character to me, which makes it hard to really care about what happens to him.

I appreciate this manga for teaching me a lot of about this period of Japanese history, even if it does spend a little too much time on ceramic pottery.

I really like how history didn't repeat itself like it was with Rikyu's seppuku but instead rhymed like Mark Twain remarked. In the end it wasn't quite the world that Tokugawa wanted but it also wasn't dyed to Oribe's liking either.

Oribe's comicality didn't die with him and the world didn't turn upside down because of Oribe which was Tokugawa's primary angst.

I really enjoyed this manga. And yes I agree with @TitanInsane it was a bit hard to follow sometimes as well. I did find myself doing a bit of background reading but I still didn't quite understand some of the manga.

I understand if the mangaka wanted to end on a positive note. But I can't help but feel so much anxiety and discomfort after reading the final chapter. It felt unresolved (intended?) and moody. There was so much that the characters wanted to say and hopes for the future that wasn't to be. Their intimate brotherhood of aesthetes one by one shuffling their mortal coil.

I really wanted to know more about Oribe. I do believe he survived. I do not think that the elderly man who lived in Okinawa was anyone else. Not Hideyori or his eldest son that managed to flee from the Shogunate. I can't think of anyone else. His eldest son despite his regrets was so overwhelmingly a warrior in spirit and has never showed any interest in the path of the aesthete. Whilst Hideyori did have a fondness for Oribe I find that his character was much more multidimensional and burdened by his high station to be devoted that much to aestheticism.

If I was in Oribe's shoes I would not be able to live happily dabbling in pottery know that I was spared. That I alone survived whilst my sons most likely met their ends gruesomely. My wife is also most likely is dead and if not that living in poverty with no sons, no husbands and no properties to her name.

Now even if Shogun Hidetada promised Oribe that his wife would be spared it would not change the fact that his sons paid the price for their father's mistakes or that his wife has now lost everyone in her family.

Oribe did win me over at the very end despite losing me with his political machinations. It was very beautiful how Oribe was able to briefly get Tokugawa to come to his side albeit only briefly.

The world is too large too vibrant to be neatly categorised by straight lines and organised in squares.
