I liked this anime but the only thing that made me turn up my nose a little was that the female cast started supporting the protagonist too quickly, without any hint of gatekeeping or toxicity. Specially considering the protagonist had the reputation of a creep. That's not realistic in a group of 5-6 women

The entire show isn't realistic in the first place.

I mean, he becomes noticeably better at communicating and being normal as the show progresses so, outside of the first few eps, I dont think they actually see him as a creep. Any comments they make seem like more of a tease about his social awkwardness.

Regarding their lack of toxicity, I agree that it's not very realistic but most of them don't even know about the two of them until later on anyway, at which point, what kind of friend would try and drive away Ichikawa when he's made clear efforts to grow as a person socially and when Anna clearly shows that she enjoys him being around?

in the real world, people often don't stop to consider others feelings and convince themselves that they are always right, so while I agree that Anna's friends are a bit unrealistic, I honestly can't think of a better way to ruin a cast of characters than to make them act as real people in that situation would. The show is supposed to be wholesome so it'd ruin the vibe completely imo.

Another thing too is anime is filled with characters who are pricks a lot. If anything, it is quite refreshing to see such a nice ensemble cast for a change. Nothing comparable to reality, but a far cry from the norms of anime in a good way.

Agreed. Outside of moral atrocities like child porn or racist undertones etc, it's for the best that we have a show for everything. It keeps the medium refreshing to consume.

You complain about this being unrealistic, but such a 10/10 babe as Yamade even acknowledging a manlet's very existence is much more unrealistic.

The show wasn't realistic on any level. And the side cast was there just to enforce the idea that those two MCs are good for each other and evolving to make themselves worthy. They are less than characters and more like background elements to show a certain aspect of the story. So of course, they would do whatever it needs to make the story work.

Well, for starters, even though it's more realistic than many other rom-coms, the show is still pretty much pure wish fulfillment. Secondly, Yamada is a fairly positive and outgoing person with an expectedly positive and outgoing social circle, so I don't think her friends would be toxic to the shy guy she likes. After all, their relationship develops quite gradually and slowly, not in a way that makes you worry that your best friend is hanging out with "some freak."

Actually that’s not true. They didn’t just start supporting him.

The male MC was not even pursuing the female MC.

The friends didn’t even know they had been talking in the library until later.

When they saw in class that she was interested in him, then they began to come in board.

So that’s why they didn’t block him.
Note: I don’t lazily watch 3-5 episodes, biasedly compare to other anime, or unfairly judge by surface level similarities. With every anime I start, I watch the entire series, both Japanese Sub & English Dub, then judge each anime based on what they present, to give an honest and fair rating.

@Piromysl And why you think a 10/10 babe wouldm't acknowledge a manlet? Because in our society, women and probably men also would have negative and toxic reactions to the news, resulting in damage on multiple levels to the 10/10 babe's life and career... so the point you raised is no different from OP's but falls within his speech...

We truly live in a society.

Really? I know it used to be a sign of wealth (and therefore attractiveness) during historical times but for that to be a modern concept is wild.

It has been a little bit since I have seen the show/read the manga. But Yamada’s friends don’t open up to Ichikawa right away. They start being unaware of his existence. I believe even though we only see their interactions in quick episodes, a good chunk of time passes as the story goes on. Yamada’s friends are probably good at reading Yamada on whom she trusts and doesn’t trust. I mean. Look at what they do with the senpai. They immediately close ranks. They could probably tell Yamada was uncomfortable with that guy. But with Ichikawa? Yamada is always the one approaching him, instead of the other way around. They probably notice that and accept it. BUT. You also forgot that Moeko does test Ichikawa. She watches him when the senpai tries to get Yamada’s number from him, and she also tries to invite him up to a room and he refuses. There probably was other observations not shown in the anime/manga. But to me it felt like at least Moeko vetted Ichikawa. And the others probably made their own judgments and observations.

it's a group of 4 girls. Yamada likes Ichikawa. Moeko knows ichikawa since elementary school and proves him in episode 11. Yoshida said "if Yamada likes you, I will trust her judge." Bayashiko didn't even realise. Are every teenager in Japan supposed to be an asshole? A big part of the plot is Ishikawa realising that he is not the protagonist of an edgy manga, that he is not special and that nobody is hating him in secret. The cast are just normal people living their lives. The majority of people are good people or just lives their live.

I just want to say this if you don't like this just ignore it,,

what I like about the dangers first few episodes is that they show the first few episodes that are totally from ichikawas perspective , not from any others , no anime does this on this level, I mean , no one actually thinks ichikawa as a creepy guy, no one ever mentioned at the as first few episodes are shown. only ichikawa thinks that no one likes him, he thinks everyone thinks him as a creepy guy, but that's not the case ,he is not creepy,he may be a little wired,,,, i think you didn't understand my point yet,,,, I am not that good at English,,, what I mean is first few episodes of dangers showed what ichikawa thinks of him self in outer way , he thinks himself as creepy but not others,,,, this shows portered that perfectly, they show Yamada as light ( because she is a genuinely cheerful girl ) and ichikawa as dark ( which he thinks to himself) ,,,

I love dangers first few episodes they show what ichikawa thinks himself perfectly,,,, and then makes him change..... everyone didn't understand this point that's why some of them dropped this anime...

Nah, that saved the anime imo. I started dying before the end of ep 3. If it didn’t turn around majorly I was about to drop it. So the sooner that he dropped his chunni thing and had people supporting him, the better is was imo
The right mindset when watching an anime is hoping that it will break your top 10

Too many stupid people here, did u guys even watch the show properly?? A creep? No one in his class think he's creep, it was just his own assumption that no one else liked & hated him and he's the one who deliberately stayed away from society. And yamada friends weren't like side characters in other romance anime where they blatantly get involved with the relationship of the two main characters and force them to be together. They mostly just watched and paid attention to them, and over time they saw that Ichikawa and Yamada interacted more and more often and from there they started to know that they both liked each other, but they didn't immediately accept and support Ichikawa, in eps 11 you can see that Moeko was testing Ichikawa whether he was suitable for Yamada or not by leaving Ichikawa alone with Nanpai who wanted to ask for Yamada's number, but there Ichikawa firmly refused to give it to him and from there Moeko started supporting Ichikawa. Honestly they're more realistic than most of side characters in romance anime because in real life people tend to just watch and didn't really care for others relationship.

I'd agree if they weren't super young like it was more ichikawa thought everyone looked at him as a freak and thus made him act like one but as shown in the 1st episode he doesn't really ever do anything that creepy it's more he's just the quite kid maybe a little werid but nothing so extreme that people would down right reject him for no reason, you have to remember ichikawa didn't really do anything to be labeled an outcast he just has a hard time making friends when he first enters school and thus thinks very poorly of himself

I am pretty happy this annoying trope is not carried out. Considering the male cast surrounded the MC, it's understandable why he isn't gatekeeped.

Basically every other male character is kind of creepy and just likes Yamada because of her looks. They go out of there way to stare and act different around her. Kyou kind of does the opposite of every male and he almost avoids her or tries to avoid her almost. Her friends are really used to guys being overreaching and trying way to hard to be with her. Kyou also doesn't treat her friends poorly and try to use them as a stepping stone to get to Anna.

Not sure I get where you're coming from.

Hara's always been okay with Ichikawa, especially after he's actively tried getting her and Kanzaki together and took the blame for the whole Yamada tombstone incident. They honestly share some of the sweetest interactions in the show, second only to Ichikawa's interactions with Yamada.

Chihiro's also never had a problem with him. He even helps tutor her in math and both have actually done the most gatekeeping together keeping Adachi and Haruya away from Yamada. Not to mention she was the only one to witness Ichikawa launching his bike in the river to stop Haruya when he was pressuring Yamada.

Even Moeko, who's been the most against Ichikawa since the beginning, came around after he refused to give Yamada's number to Haruya against her wishes and refused Moeko's playful advances after the fact.

The only one who maybe wouldn't be okay with with him is Yoshida since they haven't really interacted.

Not sure why you'd think it's unrealistic they wouldn't be toxic ot gatekeeping when almost all the girls are on good terms with Ichikawa before him and Yamada are anything more than friends.
