To understand all of the jokes, you need to watch off of the main story anime (Fate/Zero, Fate/Stay Night Unlimited Bladeworks and Fate/Heaven's Feel). You will also need to watch/read Lunar Legend Tsukihime, another visual novel from Type-Moon, the same company that created Fate/Stay Night.

Tsukihime has a visual novel, a manga and an anime. Just bear in mind that the visual novel is amazing, but too long, so the manga is the best option to understand Tsukihime, and the anime is considered to be pretty garbage.

Being a fan of the Fate franchise, this Anime is almost indispensable, we have a crossover between the characters from Stay Night and Tsukihime, and if you've already played the visual novel by our vampire girl Arcuied, Carnival Phantasm will be a great extra... Like an example was how I started Fate:
Fate: Fate Stay Night (2006)
Tsukihime (Visual Novel)
Tsukihime (Anime)
Fate/Carnival Phantasm (2011)
Fate/Prototype (2011)
Fate/Zero (2012)
Fate/Zero: Onegai! Einzbern Soudanshitsu (2012)
Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works (2014)
And the list goes on...

The VN isn’t that long. It’s much shorter than Stay Night

But the manga I could read in only two days. Way faster than the visual novel to be honest. And for someone who really wanted to watch Carnival Phantasm at that time, it was clearly the best option.

It's a crossover of Fate/stay night, Tsukihime, and Melty Blood.

I had only watched Fate/stay night but I still loved it. The Tsukihime and Melty Blood characters were funny too tho.

But the manga only adapts the Arcueid Route, any jokes based on the Far Side Routes like
won't really make as much sense as if you read the VN

Even if it's only the Arcueid route, the jokes were still understandble because of the personalities of each character you already got to know.
