Hey guys,
I'm thinking about recommending my mother some animes and I absolutely love Oshi No Ko. Do you think it's a beginner friendly anime or do you think that it has too much "weird" stuff in terms of reincarnating as an idols son, etc?

i think its a beginner friendly anime. i recommended it 2 a friend as his 1st anime and he watches anime now. though it may not fit everyone so i would recommend a silent voice, kny(demon slayer) or any simple romance anime with about 12 ep.

In my opinion I don’t think Oshi no ko is a very good starter, the plot doesn’t go anywhere in the first season, and I think there is a lot of weird stuff in there, depending who you are. But every anime ever has stuff like that, except a few, I recommend you show her something like violet evergarden, or maybe vivy or even steins gate, or just something popular.

Well, if u are new to the world of anime, AND also if took a liking on slice of life anime. Go ahead. Pretty much recommended.

Well after my through out 1 whole season of observation.

This anime is really IS the stepping stone for a whole new level of writing in anime industry. They brought u the world where u see only the surface of the idol world. But in reality, it is harsher than u think. And i think this anime really portrays the visual of dark world of idol. I was surprised by this beautiful work. It also has its own up and down situation and yes really depicts of emotional roller coaster ride as they drags u throughout the whole series.

And yes go ahead and watch it. Its guud

Honestly, I don't think a grown man with the knowledge of a grown man being reincarnated as a newborn baby of a Young starlet he likes will go over smoothly for the uninitiated.

Even with so much of the first season not really focusing on that, getting passed that in the long first episode might be a high hurdle and might turn someone new off to the medium.

Yeah I would suggest a show with a completed story for their first anime. The main story doesn't develop in the first season of OnK at all with the first episode being hard to watch for a newbie to anime.

Violet Evergarden is a great first anime. Beautiful animation, an easy to understand plot and a completed story. I would suggest that too.

I don’t know if that would make good first anime especially for someone who is older. It may seem a little too childish?
Also the first season doesn’t go anywhere with the plot.

I think the safest option for first anime will always be Death Note.

I don’t think it’s a good beginner anime, I’d start off with something that doesn’t have a lot of weird tropes. Maybe Nichijou? I’m trying to think of something that doesn’t sexualize the women too much but that’s rare.

If your goal is to drag her into the rabbit hole (日本ニキなら沼) then I'd probably say no since first impressions for a new medium like japanese anime can decide whether or not she'll like the medium

That said, if your mom was ever obsessed with a singer or an actor then oshi no ko might work as a starter

Nah, the show's literally one of the most "anime" things ever— from the plot, to the edgy protagonist, to the characters' expressions, to even how they portray real life scenarios. Non-anime watchers who think animes are weird and cringe, usually think of such kinds of show (hold the hate pls).

Absolutely not. Oshi No Ko is a great anime, but not for beginners. 99% of new viewers will be weirded out in the first 20 minutes. Episode 1 in general focuses far too much on Aqua and Ruby being fans of Ai, and that leads to certain... interesting scenes...

Not so much as weird as it he heavy emotion wise, I'd recommend to start with something light. But it's your mom so you'd know the best choice.

Not necessarily. But I find later eps to be a bit awkward in some interaction between character. I will still yes, it's still more friendlier then 90% of anime. I think my mother might like this type of show but Idk about yours tho. Starting with movies like A Silent Voice is much better idea imo.

If your Mom is into murder mysteries then it could be a cool start. I’d suggest finding anime that fit the type of shows she currently watches or books she reads if you really want to get her into it. Anime that match a person’s interest is always a decent starter no matter what it’s about.

Edit: Btw some anime I got my mother hooked on were Oshi no Ko, SpyxFamily, Frieren Beyond Journeys End, A Silent Voice, any Ghibli movie, Attack on Titan, and Demon Slayer. They all caught her interest so maybe give those a try.

It is a very good starter anime imo. If your mom has the patience to watch the first episode fully, I'm pretty sure she'll get into it right away. However there is another anime which should be suitable for your mother, that is Attack on Titan, you should definitely recommend it to her. However Oshi no Ko is less complicated and far more enjoyable while relaxing.

Edit: pls don't make her watch something like Demon Slayer in the beginning, it would feel disgusting (I guess). No, not even Jujutsu Kaisen (curses are super difficult to understand). Even Code Geass shouldn't work (I guess), so try showing her something like Violet Evergarden, A Silent Voice, Your Name, etc. They would work out perfectly aside from Oshi no Ko.

It not a good beginner anime, the anime try it best to be complicated and complex although it isn't even need in the story!
The Reincarnation was pointless and the character lives before being Reincarnation seem to be irrelevant to the MC's and forgot!
Like are they not going to recover his body, why is the Mc determine for revenge for someone else instead of himself( the killer)!
Yeah not Good beginner anime, it was fun to watch but wouldn't recommend it!

If you are recommending for someone specific, you should either be 100% sure the genre is to their liking or just pick something with a completed story. Personaly would say OnK is too much all over the place for a new commer, especially from an older audience.

Anime are made to capture teen and young adult audiences! whether your mum enjoy it or not
A 30+ adult view on the anime doesn't determine whether it a good starter!
The anime main focus is becoming an idol /actor
and disregard the intriguing Reincarnation and revenge as a side story which suppose to be the opposite!
Which make the story confusing for no reason!
And Semi dramatic!
Personally I think it a good starter for non anime watcher but if your an anime fan I wouldn't recommend it as a return beginner anime!!

It's really bad choice, unless your mother is really progressive and eager to know what younger people like. I would recommend something more familiar to western viewer.
Spy Family might be the best for adult beginner. Also Ghost in the shell, Princess Mononoke, Death Note. Attack on Titan can be cringe in the first season, but good story and characters are worth it, and will be appreciated by adult viewer.

I think whenever someone introduces people to anime, they should always start with Ghibli movies. That's the softest way in
However, if your mom is an avid J-pop idol fan, then sure, by all means

Oshi no ko is easily my favourite anime of 2023, but I can’t say it’s beginner friendly. I’d recommend new anime viewers to watch at least one or two entire shows before watching Oshi no ko. That’s just my opinion though.

I don't really think that it is a good beginner anime. A reincarnation story about a guy who wants revenge for himself and an idol with whom he is obsessed seems a little bit weird to recommend to first-time anime watchers. Especially with family members, but maybe it's just my family that I wouldn't suggest any anime to. :D

Definitely not in my opinion. The long first episode and potentially "confusing" or weird plot isn't beginner friendly to me. Not to mention that I didn't particularly like this series as an anime fan, so if your mother doesn't that might turn her away from the medium as a whole

I recommended you mainstream and safe titles.
But if you want to show you mother something just as much emotional as Oshi No Ko, I would say Re:Zero is nice for that. It's borderline weird for new comers. Still recommend to watch it after introduction to more safe anime.

i wouldn't really say so. oshi no ko's depiction of reincarnation isn't something i think would sit well with beginners. some better shows to get someone into drama anime would be something violet evergarden or sakurasou. this may differ for everyone though, as i got into anime through date a live of all shows...

For someone newer to anime, the first thing I ask is what kind of stories they like. It's better to start them on something they're familiar with (like fantasy, romance, mystery, etc.) before introducing them to more unique subtypes of anime or those with specific tropes. While Oshi No Ko is a good anime, I don't think I would start your mom on an anime like that. I would recommend something based on other shows, movies, or books she has already seen that she likes.

Example, if she likes the Marvel Universe or DC, a good recommendation could be something like One Punch Man or My Hero Academia since both focus on super heroes in different ways. Or if she likes mysteries or supernatural phenomenon, Link Click would be a good one since it has both. Historical? Moriarty the Patriot or Violet Evergarden.

But start with what's familiar and then ask about different types of stories once they are comfortable with the medium and want to explore a little bit. Hope this helps! :)

Not for beginners, especially if it is your mom. She would probably quit directly after watching the first few minutes. Cause the first episode is 1.5 hours long already and the genre is very confusing for people who just started watching anime.

Well I don't think it will be confusing, it is way too easy to understand and the concept is fairly simple, it's about the life of idols, if his mum is a little bit into k-pop she'd understand everything, but you don't even need to be into k-pop to understand. Also, OnK is a seinen, means it's specifically made for adults, and I think OnK is perfect for an adult woman. The first season don't even go too deep in terms of plot, but it gets more deep eventually, and it'll eventually make more and more sense why it is a seinen. The only thing that might feel a bit complicated (if at all) is that reincarnation thing, but there is some plot around it which will eventually be explained, this is how most complex stories start. Regardless the first episode is an emotional rollercoaster in itself and I have seen no anime set the tone for a show as nicely as OnK did, and the death of Ai was sad enough to make anyone cry, and mums are usually very emotional so there's no way she wouldn't like it.
Nevertheless they don't overthink about any show, so I think it's a proper choice. At the same time I think AoT would be a good choice aswell because I have seen a few mums comment themselves that they got recommended by their kids and they started watching it and now they are fans.

Its not a good starter show, idol culture, reincarnation, ruby fantasizing about her mother and the part about her boobs, general anime tropes like tsundere (arima), the suicide episode, the babies talking to the stepmother like theyre god, and much more.

Oshi no ko is a 9/10 show but its not good as a starter
