I'm seeing a common theme throughout the stories. Most of the yaoguai are naive and innocent, completely devoid of the duplicitous nature of humans, with a very simple desires that they hold on to for decades or even hundreds of years. It was established from the very beginning of the first episode, "I don't understand humans". And so they suffer when they interact with humans, who are complex and changing.

There are some malevolent yaoguai, too. But they also have simple goals.

It seems like the snakes are the most sophisticated. Mr. Liu says he's going to eat Mo Ya but it's not clear if he's being serious or if that's just his excuse to protect him.
