A misconception

It was neither of those, as evident in EP 9 and 12. It was just an act to convince himself that he didn't fit in and that he was a "weird freak." The same way he tried to convince himself that Yamada was "using" him and also that thing with the Switch. He was taking the easy way out, telling himself that there is a defect in his brain that he can't do anything about.

Exactly, I mean the main age demographic of chuuni is middle school, and this is a middle school romance anime. the things he does can easily be explained away as chuuni behavior.
