A misconception some people still somehow seem to have after watching the whole show is MC's thoughts about murder at the beginning were a "gimmick" and "dropped" early on. It was neither of those, as evident in EP 9 and 12. It was just an act to convince himself that he didn't fit in and that he was a "weird freak." The same way he tried to convince himself that Yamada was "using" him and also that thing with the Switch. He was taking the easy way out, telling himself that there is a defect in his brain that he can't do anything about.

im already seeing myself rewatching thus eveery year. I was blow away how good show was. I never expected after first ep that will be any more good but now its one of my favorites one. And great addition to all pros in anime is that they slowly fell in love and it was displayed so natural i love it.

My problem wasn't whether it was dropped or a gimmick, it was how that whole element of the story was kind of brushed aside completely after the first few episodes and then brought back at the end for his "realization". I think if there was a little more self reflecting concerning his obsession with murder in the middle episodes it would have been a little smoother of a transition to the romance side of things. Overall I still thought the show was great, it's just that that was the only thing that held this show at an 8 instead of 9 for me.

It wasn't brushed aside completely, he was still reading those murder books. He calls himself "messed up" and reads those books because murderers are supposedly the most messed up people right? What better way to go about it than trying to understand their thought process. He stopped thinking about it regarding Yamada after he started actively interacting with her. Regardless tho, those thoughts were only one way to show his insecurities and low self-confidence, it doesn't have to be constant in the same way.

He tried his best to rationalise his disappointment and tried to fool himself. Great touch by author. Easily the best show of the season.

The fact that anyone would believe otherwise is surprising.

He's a chuuni dork. That's really all there is to it. He's basically the same as the kid from Komi who was convinced she was an evil wizard.

Exactly, I mean the main age demographic of chuuni is middle school, and this is a middle school romance anime. the things he does can easily be explained away as chuuni behavior.

Chunibyo translates as "second year syndrome", and our heroes are second years. I doubt that was an accident.

Because there was never any obsession, it was just a cover. The show is about how they found each other and how they make each other better, getting rid of self imposed walls with self acceptance is part of that.

OMG I was starting to think I was the only one with this understanding
It’s nice seeing that other people have actually seen through the top layer of the show most people stop at
