I can picture the era it was released in and it makes sense why this has a 6 rating on mal. But watching it a decade later, is this not one of the most brilliant and forward-thinking works created in the anime space in this era? It called so much of what came after its release in a super creepy eerie way, but it still has so many awesome funny moments that haven't aged a bit. If this one came out this season I believe it would be a massive hit, at least Odd Taxi cult classic level. But this is so much more than any of its parts. It's Gurren Lagann put thru the Gintama-space and I have no idea why no one still seems to want to give it a shot. It's infuriating one one side but also I'm so happy to know it exists and can brag about it for years to come until people realize this is Fleetwood Mac 'Dreams' on the other.

Following this weekly was an experience. It had it's ups and downs but there aren't many shows I can recall as vividly as some moments in this one 10 years later. A lot of my experience was not just the anime, it was speculating what would happen next and discuss what happened last week. And I've thought about bumping up it's score more than once.

It was also airing in not only a really strong anime season, in a very strong thursday iirc. Kill la Kill, Gin no saji s2, Ping pong the animation and Samumenco were releasing episodes on the same day, so I can imagine some folks putting it to the side at that time.

The first 11 or so episodes are great. After that, it just felt like a clusterfuck. I also felt that it started feeling more like a mockery of toku series and tropes and less a tribute.

Definitely came out swinging but left something to be desired towards the end.

Yall gotta be asleep the ending is the best part and the thing that brings the whole ridiculous thing together, how this thing can build in the way it does but end in the way it does is a masterclass.

How can there be so disconnected moments of brilliance in an anime just floating in space, the end with the idol song after she gets back from being traumatized is still one of the most uncomfortably affecting moments I've ever experienced in this medium.
