For those that watched - Is this just a recap or a retelling like Utena did?

Haven't watched the Utena movie yet, but I've read that while the story of both the anime and the movie are basically the same, the way of telling it is greatly different. Will this be the same with Penguindrum?

The Utena movie was an entirely new movie with new animation and story, while this movie is mostly re:cycled animation and story.

I watched the original show when it came out and I recognised a lot of the scenes in the movies, but thinking back and doing some reading there were a few parts that were crucial to the story that appeared to be missing from the 2 movies. It was one heck of a ride though. Still visually beautiful, still confusing but well worth watching. I think I will go binge the series again.

The first episode was too fast pacing, but the second season slowed down and was good. The first ep I'd give it a 6.5, and for the second episode, I give it an 8/10.

I feel like the movie had more structure and organization than the original, but I would recommend watching both. The original hits you more in the feels while the movie has a happier ending. Like the person stated above, it is basically 95% recap. If you were to watch the movie, just watch the ending scene to get the satisfying ending it deserves.
