I´ve watched the original series twice and both movies recently. In my opinion, the movies are great and trimmed down some unnecessary aspects of the anime while also improving the ending. The messages and motifs of the original series were not lost in the adaptation, I would even dare to say that the plot seems clearer in these movies due to some subtle changes and added exposition.

Even so, I do prefer the original series due to its length (more content to enjoy) and the extended subplots that did not make it into the movies. Penguindrum was the first series by Ikuhara that I´ve watched and made me fall in love with his directing style, he definitely hasn´t lost his touch since then.

I too saw the original and have just completed the movies, the movies seemed to work better for me, however here were parts that were important that appeared to be missing from the movies.  But they were a great watch and I am now probably going to binge the series after so many years.
OK. I just binged the original shortly after watching the movies and I will be honest and say I preferred the series. Why? it seemed to flow better and didnt have odd gaps in it. Plus, there were more penguin scenes. I cannot believe how much I enjoyed it, and thats probably because there was no 1 week gap between episodes. Survival Strategy!!!
I rest my case.

I think I was too young when I watched the TV series. The meaning of the story went completely over my head. Now I'm older and I've read "Underground" by Haruki Murakami. I understand the story a lot more. Personally, I found the movies more digestible than the original anime. The music is still as good as it was, if not better. However, there are less transformation scenes, which is unfortunate because these were my favorite part of the show:

The original series is unquestionably better for me.
