Knowing twitter, I'm surprised it's only just started now, but it looks like a certain number of people are pretty salty about this show. They think the anime is problematic, as by portraying the social "conflict" caused by Tomo not conforming to the stereotypes of girls her age, the show does not address her "potential" transsexuality in any way, nor does it attempt to establish Tomo as the girl boss of the girls and boys around her. The idea that Tomo is just an ordinary girl who wants to have an idealized female experience but can't because of her tomboy-ish personality seems bigoted to them. What do you think about it? Do you also think that such stories are problematic in any form?

I'm Agender/ trans masc person and this was one of my favourites mangas ever since it started releasing back in the day.
in my head Tomo was always kinda non binary even though I didn't know the term existed at that time.
but I wouldn't say it's problematic, it's a cute show, that's it

what's funny is that this show has a pretty positive theme about being yourself and not forcing yourself to conform to gender stereotypes. what's also great about it is that it doesn't force the message down your throat, but rather allows it to naturally exist in the show.

I also find it funny when people try to force sexual identities onto characters. she is clearly established as a straight female character. her "tomboyishness" has nothing to do with her sexuality. by trying to force a sexuality/gender onto someone based on their personality, you are utilizing the very stereotypes that you despise.

I think it’s a non issue. I think the way the show dealt with Tomo’s desire to be more feminine yet having difficulty with it greatly. Nowadays, we always see stories of girls wanting to break from classical girl stereotypes but we rarely see the reverse of it. I mean just because our society is reightfully moving away from these stereotypes doesn’t mean that some people still don’t like the idea of being a girly girl and stuff like that. In fact, I thought people would’ve appreciated Tomo’s default mode as a tomboy and the fact that she’s rarely judged or ridiculed for it in the series and is in fact championed and respected for it.

It's funny because the baseline for potential transsexuality comes from stereotypes as well. What are these girlish and boyish norms anyway? Who cares.

On the contrary, I think the anime was good to point out that she can act in any way that is comfortable to her but still be a girl. Because that is was an actual diversity is about. There's no need to conform to anything, she can have her own personality without sticking it with labels on gender identity.

Posting this comment for transphobes and homophobes that are sadly in this community:

First, I don't think a persons genitalia determines who the person is.
in fact, I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with it.

Second, this is what church did to us, forcing us to believe only in 2 genders to increase world's population.
So...
There's enough people now, we can go back to how we used to be, no gender stereotypes, no sexualities, everyone just being themselves and loving whoever they want.

That's all. Goodnight.

I really enjoyed the romance in the show. it felt different than most anime romance. I hate how just because she is a tomboy people go the trans route. some women are athletic like that doesn't mean they want to be a man.

In my opinion, this story was written as a specific experience that could be relatable to many. Just because they didn't make her trans is not an attack on anyone.

Sex and gender are two different things, and genitalia certainly has nothing to do with personality, which was what the person you quoted said.

They should just keep it to themselves lol many people make headcannons about characters being trans or gay or whatever for their personal likings without imposing everyone else to agree. Share your idea but don't blame the creators for not making something YOU wanted

Isn't the moral at the end of the show tho that Tomo is perfect just the way she is and doesn't need to try and conform to traditional standards of femininity?

Honestly not surprised. The trans community has been trying to convince tomboys and femboys to be trans for years. The show isn't what's problematic, it's the trans community. Not being transphobic, I'm just not going to ignore the problem. I'm sure this anime will actually help tomboys and femboys accept themselves how they are.

Nah I don’t buy it.It is stupid to socially construct characteristics of male and female.Sex would be enough or add gender as it’s synonym.

The show portrays a very specific case of a masculine person that also would like to be noticed as more femenine one, in order to appeal to a heterosexual love they have. At the same time the guy doesn’t even like when they try so hard to be feminine, he just loves them the way they are. (Also is made during the age of learning, during highschool, where most of us got to experience new stuff related to love, sexuality or attraction)

If that isn’t a clear depiction of how broad the spectrum can be, I don’t know what can.
Not every tomboyish person needs to be the boss of the pack or openly trans, if anything that is a very closed minded stupid thought.

Twitter has always been a PROBLEMATIC platform where most toxicity of toxicity arises.

It's not made for them and they're not entitled to order someone to do their bidding, are they a dictator of a king where they can trample others just as they want?

Why complain when they can just ignore it, they probably do it to some stories but potentially ruining the whole point of the story to suit their needs? Blasphemous.

That's my take on it.
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

Tomo was raised by a dad that wanted a boy thus getting more "male" personality traits I wouldn't call her trans or any dumb thing like that since she obviously sees herself as a girl just not a stereotypical one.

People try to create controversies out of literally nothing

Moreover only 3 natural gender exists, so these kind of "gender" related arguments don't deserve the attention of humanity
