Watched Love Live Nijigasaki and it felt more like a episodic slice of life. Is this similar?

Not quite. The first season tells the story of how Popipa came to be, and the story progresses with each episode. There are some emotional scenes, which I personally enjoyed, but your mileage may vary. The story of popipa continues in season 2, but in that season they introduce other bands, so it can feel a bit episodic. There's also a mobile game which tells the story of each band.
You can buy lossless digital music from your favorite Japanese artists on https://ototoy.jp/.
The songs are all DRM-free and you can re-download your purchased albums as you wish.

ps. if you are looking for Japanese albums, you have to search it in Japanese (not romaji). Just copy and paste the name.

The first season is very decent, some nice emotions and really good character development.
Season 2 is where it starts to get less interesting imo because they start to focus more and more attention on other bands, despite having a very good/interesting main band.
It doesn't get bad per say, but if you got to like the series because of Popipa like me, you might get disappointed in what comes next.

I prefer Love Live over Bang Dream, because for me the animation quality and songs of Love Live are better, but it doesn't mean I don't like Bang Dream. They are both big franchises, and I also enjoy Bang Dream enough.

I preffer Love Live but Bang Dream is also really good, the characters are really likeable and the songs are amazing. The movies in particular are a 10/10 for me, the staging is just perfect. If you are worried for the episodic nature don't be, although the first part of the second season can feel a bit episodic due to the introduction of the other band in each episode the story flows really good to the more "plot" side of the season.

Love Live seems to focus more on the girls' ambitions as stars and less about their musical talents (depending on the character). Like Bang Dream is about a band, so they are figuring out how to learn instruments. The struggles in Love Live are a bit different since they are learning to be idols by training to dance and sing. I think the drama is a bit similar if you like that. Overall they're both about a group of girls trying to do music, so If you like one there's a good chance you'll like the other.

I heard how Bandori came to be, and I’m sure one thing: Bandori were never related to idol to begin with. More like a musical band anime similar to K-on. So probably not a lot of similarities.

Haven't seen Bang Dream, but Nijigasaki is quite different from all the other Love Live seasons. It eschews the series' standard plot of "large idol group tries to win idol contest" to instead focus on the characters individually and as solo idols who aren't trying to compete.

So I made a mistake by watching that first?

I wouldn't say that. Each series (School Idol Project, Sunshine, Nijigasaki, and Superstar) has 2 seasons (a couple have sequel movies and 1 is getting a third season). It would be a mistake to watch S2 without watching S1, but the series themselves are only loosely connected and can be watched standalone. It's just that Nijisaski is so different (solo idols, not competing in Love Live) that it's not indicative of the "Love Live experience". To use an example, it would be like forming an opinion of Sword Art Online when you've only seen Alternative. Just because you like/dislike Alternative doesn't mean you'll like dislike SAO proper. Similarly, the other Love Lives feel less episodic because the girls have a set goal of winning the main competition, and it's about the group rather than individual idols.

Interesting. Well I'll give Love Live another shot. Which one do you recommend? I was kinda leaning towards Love Live SuperStar, but not sure if that's considered a good starting point.

Given your comments on Nijigasaki, Superstar might be the best recommendation, as it has the strongest sense of progression. Conventional wisdom says the first series, School Idol Project, but I actually have not seen it. Personally, I started with Sunshine. It references and mentions the first series a lot, but I didn't have any issues keeping track of what was going on and I really enjoyed it.

I recommend watching em in order of releases. I gave up on nijigasaki S2 and superstar S2 as well they just didn't do it for me, like the original and sunshine but that's just my opinion. Main gripe for me with the 2 later ones are the characters are really meh.

I watched 5 episodes of Superstar so far and it’s exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the recommendation! :)

I haven’t watched nijigasaki myself but bang dream revolves around 7 bands and not 1. The first season only focuses on 1 band poppin’party. It’s probably the least well received seasons. They switch to 3D animation after season 1 which still doesn’t look great but at least better than season 1’s animation. I don’t think love live and bang dream are comparable but one thing is for sure. Both franchises have banger music
