So does jun think that Tomo is actually a boy or is it that tomo acts so much like a boy that he treats her like a boy?

no he knows she’s a girl, at the start he didn’t have any romantic feelings towards her and just thought of her as a guy friend but now he’s catching feelings. At least that’s what i’ve gathered

Jun grew up with Tomo and always looked up to her as someone strong and dependable, but now Tomo likes Jun in a romantic way. Jun has denied his true feelings up until recently where he’s afraid of what will happen to their relationship if he takes the next step of love and acknowledges those feelings. But besides all this, Tomo is a tomboy at heart so for the longest time it was easy for Jun to ignore Tomo’s femininity. But as the beach episode demonstrated, it’s literally impossible for Jun to completely ignore her charm and sexiness at this point.

In short, Jun basically being a tsundere

He's had feelings from the beginning, but he relates to her both as a bro and a girl, so it's complicated. Plus, he fears changing the relationship.
If you reply back to me and I never respond, I lost interest and don't care. Sorry about that.

I mean, in my opinion a tsundere is someone that tries to be as distant as possible from the person they like unless they can’t help it. For example, the girl only walks home with her crush because they live next to each other/live in the same direction. Jun doesn’t mind being around Tomo at all and even hugs on her a lot. But you are right; essentially, Jun is a tsundere with the hots for his childhood friend but he doesn’t want to accept those feelings and gets angry/upset when people call him out on it.

Jun looks up to Tomo and feels like he's not really worthy to be her boyfriend, plus he's scared of changing the status quo so forces himself to view her as a guy.

Is this anime not relatable at all for most of the audience out of curiosity? The best part about this series for me is how accurately it portrays emotions over time. Childhood friends whether tomboy or not

I'm confused, have you watched the anime or nah? or do you mean when they first met as kids? cause that wasn't clear but I mean from episode 1 it's obvious he knows

EP9 shows why jun keeps insisting on keeping a masculine image of tomo because they made “a man’s promise”, and jun believes he has yet to fulfill his end. I think it’s kind of like those enemy to friend tropes kind of both jealous of each other the whole time while the viewers are face palming. I don’t think this is really a spoiler they talked about it earlier.

That, and Tomo barely functions as a girl, at least in most traditional senses.

I think that when they first met Jun thought that Tomo was a boy because, she dressed, talked, and acted like a boy and even if he knows that Tomo is a girl he can’t help but see her as one of the boys. She is stronger than him and is often put with the boys group for sports activities even though she’s obviously a girl and now that they are in high school Tomo has decided that she wants Jun to see her as a girl and Jun is going about it very slowly.
