Welcome To Holo Interviews. The #1 Interviews Club in the world! Today our guest is a newcomer to The Holoist Society and our glorious republic; Holo Interviews. Please give a warm welcome to @BunicuMarin
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My real name is Radu and I am 18 years old. More of an introvert than an extrovert, but I like to think that I balance my social life pretty well. I am a senior in high school and I hope I'll get into a computer science college this year.
How did you get into anime and manga?
When I was little( 7 or 8 years old) there was this football anime on TV called "Inazuma Eleven". Since I liked football a lot, of course, I liked this anime as well. After the anime finished airing, I stopped watching anime completely. That was until three years ago when I was browsing Netflix and noticed that Inazuma Eleven was available to watch there. For nostalgia, I decided to watch it and to my surprise, I enjoyed it as much as I did when I was little. After that, I found that Inazuma Eleven had a lot of sequels and spin-offs so I watched them all. At this point, I was starting to get back into the anime medium. After watching everything about Inazuma Eleven, I started Naruto for pretty much the same reason, nostalgia. My cousin who is 5 years older than I used to watch Naruto like crazy, so I got curious: What was so good about it? Fast forward a few months and I finished Naruto, it was indeed good. I still don't understand the hate about Naruto, I get that it's not perfect, but people bringing up the filler episodes as an argument definitely haven't watched the fillers. I agree that during the war arc, the filler episodes made no sense, but the fillers from the original Naruto and at the start of Shippuden really brought a lot of world-building to the story. Anyway, after finishing Naruto, I was thirsty for new anime. I started watching attack on titan, then got into romance anime and little by little I got to where I am now, an anime fan who watches almost any genre.
The first manga I read is Nisekoi, as a continuation of the unfinished anime. I considered manga inferior to anime when I started to read, but now I understand that both mediums have both pros and cons.
I am also a big fan of the webtoon/manhwa medium. My favorite is Lookism, a webtoon that covers a wide range of themes and does it perfectly.
What are some of your favorite shows and who are your favorite characters/waifus?
I make a very clear distinction between action anime and romance/slice-of-life anime because I like them both for different reasons. As an action anime, my favorite is Hunter x Hunter. Everything about this anime is perfect: the music, the animation, the story, the characters, and the world-building. Hxh is really peak fiction. As for romance/slice-of-life, my favorite is definitely Kaguya-sama: Love is war. I like it so much, that I started collecting the manga in physical form.
I like badass characters like Joker from Fire Force, Ayanokoji from Cote, and Gojo from jjk. As for waifu, not surprisingly, I like Kaguya from Kaguya-sama.
Which anime or manga do you feel is overrated? Underrated?
I might get a lot of hate about this but the most overrated anime in my opinion in One Piece. I don't hate One Piece at all, I watched 500 episodes of it and I agree that at its peaks, one piece is better than 99% of anime. But most of the time, One Piece has slow episodes that seem to contribute nothing to the story. I rather watch a well-paced filler episode than a canon episode that covers 1/2 of a manga chapter in 20 minutes.
As for underrated, I'd say Bungou Stray Dogs.
What kind of music are you into in general, and do you have any favorite Anime OST's
I listen to pretty much any type of music, from rap and pop to classical piano music. When I watch anime, I pay close attention to the OST's. For me, music in anime is a big factor when scoring it here on MAL. Hunter x Hunter has excellent music like King of Predators, In the Palace, and Mozart's Lacrimosa which plays during a key moment from the York New arc and can't forget about Gon's rage theme.
But everybody knows that Hunter x Hunter has great music. Want to know an anime that went under the radar this and past season and has incredible music? The Eminence in Shadow. I don't usually watch isekai because most of them look like they were made without much thought behind them, but this one is different, and the few people that like it, don''t seem to notice how good the music is.
What is Fantasy Anime League and how are you doing in it?
Fantasy Anime League is a competition here on MAL in which you try to guess what anime will become popular during a season. My first try was in the Fall 2021 season and I place 50th from around 50000 contestants. In the next few seasons, however, I didn't do too well...
Outside of anime, what other interests do you have and like to do for fun?
I like coding. Actually, just an hour prior to me writing the answers for this interview I participated in a game dev competition. I am a senior in high school so this year I am studying in hopes that I can get into a computer science college.
Also, another hobby of mine is writing. I started 2 years ago and until now, I participated in quite a few contests. I also published a few novels on different platforms. Now I am serializing a novel on voyce.me called 'Weakest Gladiator.' If a Classroom of the elite x a futuristic battle tournament sound interesting you should check it out: https://www.voyce.me/series/weakest-gladiator-1
If you could live in the world of an anime you've seen or manga you've read, which would it be and why?
Maybe Bungou Stray Dogs. It doesn't seem so dangerous and I really like 1920's clothes style.
Was is the meaning behind your username?
"My username doesn't have any deep story behind it. Bunicu in Romanian, my natal language, means grandpa and Marin is a pretty common name for old people. I was playing an online game with my friends one time and I didn't have any ideas for a name so I put "Marin". They thought it was pretty funny. Since then, all on all of the games I played, my username was Marin. One time, this username was taken, so I've come up with BunicuMarin since Marin is popular with old people. I don't want to disrespect any old people, I just like how Marin sounds.
Anything you would like to say to our readers?
Be nicer. I often see how separated the anime community is, from the fandom wars and mass low-scoring an anime just so your favorite can be on top to just insulting each other just based on a different opinion. Think about how many happy moments anime gave you. Now think about someone new trying to get into this medium just to see so much hate being thrown around. This hate can cause other people to see the anime community as something bad, and that's how you end up with kids getting bullied at school for liking anime, because 'anime is not cool'. Just be nicer.
A very nice and whole message to close out the interview for our readers. Thank you for taking the time to share your story, anime-takes, and about yourself with us
And everyone, don't forget to check out Weakest Gladiator by our up and coming writer of The Holoist Society
