Here's what I learned recently about the term 'yuri': I know we Westerners tend to view 'yuri' as the female equivalent to 'yaoi', however, that couldn't be further from the truth. Yuri is so much more than just girls kissing, it can also just be a depiction of two girls sharing a strong emotional or spiritual bond with each other. Think platonic love between friends or 'romantic friendships' (better known as Class S in Japan). Believe it or not, that's what yuri was all about back in the day and girls were actually their target demographic. Then came the growing popularity of yuri with legit lesbian themes that would garner a steady male audience as well as a female one. Hence 'yuri' or GL as we know it today.

So in the case of Lycoris Recoil, Chisato and Takina's bond doesn't need to be romantic in the traditional sense for it to be classified as yuri. By the definition I just shared, it literally already is.

Case closed.

@ Waselwaw Nope. Yaoi/BL have historically depicted homoerotic relationships between men. Completely different from yuri. That's why in my original post, I said, "I know we Westerners tend to view 'yuri' as the female equivalent to 'yaoi', however, that couldn't be further from the truth." Originally, yaoi was created by women for women (whom we now know as fujoshi) but it has also attracted a gay male audience as well. There's also bara (homoerotic media marketed to gay men typically created by gay male authors/mangaka).

Seems like most people are saying it's not yuri and that the two main leads are just real good friends. I wish more people would not label relationships such as this as yuri. It's fucking pathetic and irritating. It would be like labelling Frodo and Sam from Lord of the Rings as yaoi because of their good friendship. Anime fans, what can you do?

Anyways, I think I'll give this a shot when I finally find the time to watch. The amount of great anime airing in Winter 2023 is astonishing. My favorite has got to be Endo and Kobayashi Live!
