I really like the info dump and lore of this show. We got more of that about fiends, in particular the Flame ones.

But yeah, even based on the narratives so far, there's still so much more mystery in this anime that has yet to be revealed. The concept of Lord of the Fire Hunters was particuarly interesting though, as if it's foreshadowing the future of the series.

A lot of good lore dumped today. Koushi entrance into the central archive is really paying dividends. Things are still a bit confusing for me but the world building is for sure taking shape. So the country’s isolated from the rest of the world and they’re not sure if there’s other humans out there?

That’s wild. I wonder if the island is like Okinawa or something where the boats go, since the map we see places the country near japan’s real location.

The forest people were actually really creepy, but extremely helpful

This is a rare instance where info dumps are pretty nice, with the quietness of the show overall. The lore is all very interesting, and while it can be a lot to take in at times, the world building is very intricate and detailed. I do wish the scene at the beginning was even darker than it how it was executed, but I'm sure there are limits due to the production and the budget. The eerie tones of the OST also feel like they're foreshadowing some darker things to happen, both on Koushi's side of things, and on Hinako's side.

Overall, still one of the more intriguing shows of the season, but one where I might need to rewatch every episode to really take everything in.

Honestly this show is very interesting with the worldbuilding and the story is still keeping my interest but holy fuck the production and overall direction is so... awkward. I would definitely read the novel instead if it was translated.

The episode explains so many details of the world building (the deities, the sickle godslayer weapon, about a foreign island,..) the and introduce the forest people… Very curious about how the story goes on. Let’s see with the next that will have the spiders.

The show is interesting, the plots good but it just pains me to see those badly animated and janky action scenes, even walking in the forest animation was bad and the black kanji frames are getting longer, next episode will be the last one for me, this hurts, to see a good story not getting funded correctly.

Things are going smoothly with koushi so I believe something really bad is going to happen to him soon.

I'm thinking that the man who adopted them is a spider.

I think it is interesting that the animation’s unique style is not fully appreciated. Perhaps being a LN adaptation has allowed the creative team to focus on the puzzle pieces and mysterious world that underlying this story.

That said, I personably find this a fascinating story. I believe that it is currently underrated and is really keeping my interest.

Whew, this is heavy and rich. I need to wait until later in the day to watch it, when I'm relaxed and my brain is open.

There's the one cheese scene of zooming into the mansion that's kinda lame, but everything else feels superior, especially the composition and color choices. That dragon fucked it up, chomped on everything. Just when I was starting to appreciate the security of the trains, homey just rolled in tossed it all about like it was nothing.

Those forest people are pretty cool and spacey, the woman(?) who spoke with the blued-out eyes gave me some chills.

That upper room in the library was awesome with those stained-glass windows and blue skies, the color of the windows shining down on the library floor. Gorgeous details.

I'm loving the pace, the two very distinct storylines which will probably meet at some time. The lore is cool and unusual. Fun world building at a chill pace.

I really like this one, don't care about the ratings it's one of my favorites this season, and the OP is still one of the best.

I agree, it's sad to see. I wasn't so sure after ep2 but this trend continued. The conversation scenes etc. are obviously fine but everything involving a little bit more movement often looks janky. This show has such a strong narrative, style and world-building and the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. Why can't a show like this have good animation, too? Especially when they pay so much attention to detail even within the lacking animation. It would be so juicy if it was smooth.

Tbh, I'm completely fine with the artwork pieces, panels and so on. They are a stylistic choice and I like them. However, it's hard to deny the wonky animation during the action scenes and for example when they walked the forest. It misses frames, it's far from smooth and the movements and forms of bodies are often janky.

I was afraid the show would go down this path from the moment I saw the PV, certainly a noticeable nosedive this week in terms of animation (you could call it janky, but to be fair it looks unfinished). Storywise not enough to keep my interest either, too reliant on exposition for my taste.

lore dump. dammmmnn, had to rewatch that scene because there was so much info, though i dont undesrtand how can one distinguish between the flame fiends an fellbeasts other than fellbeast having a different flame, like this dragon, what is it? they called it a guardian but is it a type pf beast? also was all that info implying that the Flickering Flame is somethig that they need to find? what is the difference between that an the Milennial Comet? so many questions
i dont like those scenes that have panels, like they are suppose to emulate a manga, dont like that style
gotta say, at moments i feel like im watching Shinsekai Yori, even the narrator is voiced by the same actress who voiced Tomiko who at times was narrator in SY

I really love this story.
This type of story always Hooke me up.

And, I am liking from the very first episode and the first was still the best yet.

But,
I don't know about production but it's really low.
I am clearly saying that I have no problem about art-style cause I always love unique art-style which many people hates like 'Ousama Ranking' in the beginning, but here's the deal,
This episode action scene was awful, it looked like the characters are cut pieces of paper thrown on a screen, even the way of walking between the fights was like diagonally moving and the proportions of characters was mess.

And, rest of this episode was very good just leaving the battle.
Hope, it gets better.
Please, don't let it ruin such a fascinating story and setting.

The rampage of the white dragon guardian deity certainly has Touko and the other scrambling for safety, and to make matters worse, the blazing fire and action was beyond subpar, it was terribad with some off-the-shelf production cuts that had the conscious decision to be put for aesthetics instead of true focus. Koushi at the Okibi mansion studying about the effects of fire from Fiends, and even a small sample of it can prove to be deadly.

With Kanata leading the way, Touko, Shouzou and Kaho are lead to the Treefolk to safety, but who knows what their fate lies up with. Koushi heading back to the Central Archives to find more info about fire, and through his teacher Hitoo, the confidential material are all stored in an area only accessible to the few. The lore is rich here, adding the predecessors of the fire, which evolves into the Flickering Flame and to who controls it become the Lord of the Fire Hunters.

The story and world-building continue to grow better. Just a sad letdown on the production values, which don't match what the show is going for, even aesthetically. It's a shame, really.

Still loved the episode despite atrocious animation at the start. I love the lore so far. Man-made star huh? I think the ED spoiled things, it shows the timeline of MC's adventure: we start with a village, then the train, the forest folk. At the end we see a modern city with skyscrapers, a woman who's likely going to be the goddess we've heard and the now mentioned "man-made star" at the very end. For now I'll speculate that it's some sort of high-tech spaceship and maybe there are humans who escaped the cataclysm. I love this intriguing atmosphere!

While this episode presented a lot of great lore, man did those first five minutes break my immersion for a hot minute. The animation was downright awful. I don’t know if it was rushed or if that animation style was intended by the direction, but it sure wasn’t good.

This was bit of a slower episode outside of the first five minutes. However, it did present a lot of great world building that explained in greater detail the plight of this current society and how they are very much in-the-dark (pun intended) about the rest of the world.

I'm really surprised to learn people dislike the look of this show. I think the backgrounds are beautifully drawn. And they really give you a sense of each environment the characters are inhabiting. The drawings they introduce the characters with really flesh out their personality for me. The angles are so ambitious and full of life compared to the usual seasonal stuff.

To each their own I guess. I just felt compelled to share my experience.

Also i wonder what that was that Koushi smelled on his step mom? It's one of those hints that leads into something bigger surely

The aesthetic of this anime brings back the traditional drawings that keep me wanting to watch. I can see the animation being a 'downgrade' to some but to me, the narrative and the mystory around the story complements the animation pacing.

I agree with all the points you've made about "the look" here, and to me it looks like most people in these threads would also agree.

However, I (and I think many others here) have an issue with how in some shots the drawing and the movement of characters noticeably fall apart in quality. One minute the show had me on board with beautifully-drawn characters and world, and the next the show threw me overboard with an extremely-low detail and awkwardly-animated action scenes... and the cycle repeats.

I think the still-frame stylized drawings look great, but they're very different from the art style of the rest of the show. This became an issue for me when some of these scenes did not seem to have much story significance or visual impact, but were done in the stylized art style anyway. Combined with the occasionally rough art and animation, I could not shake the feeling that the artists were picking these scenes somewhat randomly, or worse, they were doing this to get away with not having to animate complex movement.

If you are not bothered by these issues, or if you have not even noticed them, I'm happy for you. I'm seriously disappointed that it does bother me, because I find the show to be really interesting and promising overall.

My disappointment compelled me to share as well :(

So we see the aftermath of the blue eyes white dragon from the last episode. Touko escapes with the guy she worked with, and the two people she was travelling with, but Benio is taken by the dragon

Meanwhile Koushi continues his research and we learn that there are other nations out there, but we just don't know what happened to them? For some reason I just assumed this nation that we've been seeing this whole time was the only one left. I hadn't even thought about other possible ones out there. I assume we'll learn a bit more about them later on, but who knows. It is interesting! The ships that leave every year always end up going to the same island where they also speak the same language, and they ask for news of any other nations there, but they never get any info there

We also learn that something's off about Kira's mother? I really didn't get that part lol that felt weird. Same with that part where Koushi leave the central archive with his old teacher

Pretty nice episode overall imo. We just got a bit more worldbuilding, Koushi made some progress on his research, and Touko escaped the train, and is now on her way to the nearest village

RIP Benio, crazy that the white dragon guardian/diety supposedly went mad due to the "spider" group that we may see in the next episode based on the preview. We got an info dump and, while it provided some answers, it created more questions. I'm intrigued with the deep storyline despite the animation.

Hmmm, loving this, seems many threads of fate are spread across a large area. Although every time the dog gets called kanata all I can picture is Amane Kanata, who is also an angel. But completely the wrong universe. But our best doggo Kanata called to the tree people, so you know, never say never. This is shaping up to be one of my best anime's this season

I love this show! There is so much mystery that I can't wait for the episodes to come out. From the beginning there is so much death lingering in every moment and also I can only think of betrayal when looking at the characters. Like any moment a character who seems good can turn out to be the most evil thing ever. So far only the wife and the Spiders seem to be evil, but I'd love if it turned out to be the complete opposite!

The animation is not the best, but the story takes everything. The score is really low though for an anime which is this much fun.

It's kinda hard to describe, but sure! One part that definitely comes to mind was I think in the last episode when Koushi meets the doctor and they talk about his sister. Their mouths don't move at all in that sequence but then their mouths do start moving again when he meets back up with Kira. Idk that part did feel a bit confusing to me, and it seems a few people also felt it was a weird choice to have it play out like that.

And then in this episode I would say definitely the whole train wreck scene was animated a bit weirdly. One example, I thought that part where Touko's dog grabs her and runs away was not the best? Like as I was watching that part I noticed it was a bit strange too. Idk it just didn't sit well with me

Overall though I have been enjoying this! There are other weird choices like Koushi imagining his old teacher working with him in the study, only to reveal he wasn't there and it was just in his head? I thought that was odd but I love this anime in general. I feel like the animation isn't as bad as some people are making it out to be, but it can feel off at times. And if anything, I think there's another anime from this season that just has the worse animation and has been a massive disappointment

The Fire Hunter
This post will highlight some points of the show. Again for the people who're reluctant to try out this show due to poor ratings.
(Few spoilers upto 3rd episode)

● Plot and world building: In a post apocalyptic set up people can't use natural fire because when people are near it they catch fire unnaturally. Only way of obtaining necessary fire for daily life is to hunt different types of creatures from forest which is done by none other than Fire Hunters. However that fire is not available randomly. The known world of such set up has several detached villages ruled by divine clans. The divine clans have direct authority over the obtained fire. The only thing that connects these villages is a special type of transport which travels from one village to another throughout the year. They distribute obtained fire in exchange for goods and carry information from one place to another. Interesting world building.

● Mystery elements: The show takes up concepts similar to "Fire Force" in a more "Shinsekai Yori" approach regarding the mystery of the creatures, world set up and authority.

● Power system: Not quite clear yet but it seems that Fire Hunters use a special type of sickle for hunting. Special type of hounds work as their assistant in this process. The divine clans has some kind of ability over fire, water, wind, earth and wood. Yet to unveil.

● Main driving force of narrative and characters: Our female mc is saved by a Fire Hunter. While saving her the Fire Hunter dies who is known for his specialty in flame abilities. When Fire Hunters die because of someone that particular person is labelled as "cursed" and necessary atonement should be done. In our mc's case, she is given the task of taking sickle and hound of the Fire Hunter back to his family. Hence she is travelling with that special transport to reach capital. The son of the Fire Hunter who passed away (while saving our female mc) is our male mc. Him and his sister was taken in by a wealthy family since their mother also passed away from illness. Our male mc has a different kind of role. The country may face a serious threat in future as the fallen clan "Spider" wants to overthrow the ruling divine clans. Hence he needs to prepare himself while learning more about the flame abilities of his father. What comes out from the fated encounter between our two mcs, what are the mysteries of this world and how our mcs prepare themselves for that. These are the driving force of the story. Typical but solid with a bit of different approach.

● Direction and production value: The show took "action concepts" into "narrative driven approach"
Closest similar example of it is "Devilman Crybaby"
Artstyle is unorthodox and soundtrack is very much suitable. Animation of non action scenes are pretty neat and weirdly (or may be that's a common thing now) the animation of action scenes featured in opening song seemed pretty good. The up close animation of action scenes in the series so far aren't as great as above mentioned example particularly due to their similar yet unorthodox artstyle. Few cover pages of source material may also create debate about whether this approach was suitable or not. I think the show will lean towards more of it's narrative side and will be carried by how they handle the mystery elements.

TLDR (so far):
Concepts like "Fire Force"
Approach to mystery elements like "Shinsekai Yori"
Attempted blending of unorthodox artstyle and animation similar to "Devilman Crybaby"

So far will keep it among the better new shows from this season in terms of narrative.

Thanks for your reply. Its nice to interact with someone with a good eye to detail. I have noticed the zero moving mouths when dialogue is happening so I am personally chalking that upto artistic style seeing as there other choice of complex animating scenes is beyond approach. its like they almost teasing criticism to see who understands and those who do not. Personal opinion of course. And yes the Touko dog grab and movement, strange moments scene changes. For me, thats what kind of made it perfect. That bit of unsure moment when you are not 100% sure whats going on expressed in a visual art. Thats peak anime story for me.

continuing with the dragon fight from last episode, the girls are trying to escape (not sure to where but sure)
Kaho saw the doctor is dead and asks "why him and not me?" ... tbh i think that sometimes, anyone else would be a better use of resources than me lol specially if it's someone i know

that dragon is Kaho's guardian deity, is it angry because they took her away?
holy shit, did the dragon just obliterate Benio? wow
the fire hunter needs Kanata's help, but it is more worried about saving Touko lol

back to Kouchi's side, Kira isn't a fan of her family's boat lol she is also curious about Kouchi spending time in the studio, but obviously he can't tell her what they do there
talking with dad, he needs some items, and being rich makes it easy to get it all in less than a day lol
seems like he is also curious about the palace, and needs a map of potential places where the enemy clan, the spiders might attack

while remembering some of his teacher's teachings, Kouchi keeps experimenting with the flyfire, a gift from above to help them in this dark time
and damn, does that bit of flyfire he put in the pod making a lot of light... it could be seen from other rooms

back to Touko, together with Kanata, Kaho and Shoujo, seem to be the only survivors of that attack, and they enter the treefolk village, those are scary with their shiny eyes, but demons won't attack people in there

seems like Kaho's village might be done for, since the guardian dragon left that place

Kouchi went to the central library, and look who he found, his old teacher, who was worried that he stoppped trying to learn, but relieved to see that's not the case

i probably should pay more attnetion to whatever Kouchi is talking about while reading, but i just don't want to haha it's just an explanation about how the sickle, being made by the dead goddess, or how to get the fire, only fire hunters with a sickle can get it
that being said, there was a title drop at 20:04

he ended up lying to the teacher, he clearly found the book he needed lol teacher can't go to the 3rd floor cause of the dust
apparently some red haired fire hunter wanted to read the archive before, wonder who he is,

his sister Hinako, dressed in a kimono, came together with Kira to pick him up
she seems to be doing much better, thanks to the doctor
Kira wants to go the the boat festival, so they all go together

There's the one cheese scene of zooming into the mansion that's kinda lame, but everything else feels superior, especially the composition and color choices. That dragon fucked it up, chomped on everything.
got me laughing at this because yeah, that zooming into the mansion is pretty cheese. and it keeps on happening too, which only results in my further amusement.

ot: the black screen info dumps increased my interest in one day reading the novels, if it's the last thing i do.

Oh my god this show is exceptional! Its ticking all of the old school boxes, so I figured it must be an old school director and OF COURSE it's Oshii!
The music was obviously Kenji Kawai so that should have been obvious too!

I haven't cried yet but boy have I felt the emotion in the music and narrative. This is a privilege to see live. And I am cherishing it.

By definition, everything is retro since by the time you realize something has happened it's already in the past.

So did they really kill all the train folks except Touko, one dude, one girl, and fire hunter hound? And the the white dragon actually letting them slide free from the other fire hunter pressure? Okay that's unexpected, and its kinda lead them into meeting with the spider child which may or may not intentional for the dragon God....

Talks about intentional, i can't help but questioning what the visual direction this leads on. Intentional or just the production bad issue. However, reading just a little bit above, i just cannot comprehend how its their style. Like it or not, its very personal, and i really cannot comprehend it the ground story behind the fall off of this show.

But oh well, despite of that, i think the story and plot of this Hikari no Ou and the effort Koushi showed while learning the new piece of info. Its there, its still pretty good, at least for me...

Man, they could've held back on the infodump or at least presented it in a more interesting way. Lost interest halfway through.

Also, I guess I'm really on the minority with how much I love how this show is animated. Something about the way the characters move in a way that is janky yet fluid really interests me.

Wow, everyone on the train is dead, I guess don't get attached to anyone. Poor Benio...

And now I'm thinking, is Koushi's benefactor a spider?
