Struggled to enjoy the series myself, stopped after neko, but the kizu movies were easy to understand and enjoyable compared to everything else.

I hear a lot of good things about the series, so i try to watch it just recently and...its really horrible as a movie. I get it that its just the first part of a trilogy (and its even a part of wider saga), but i really wonder what kind of person coming to a cinema and thinking it was worth the money.
Now to make it clear, i have to elaborate that the visual were amazing (9/10), but everything else is kinda mid and even downright bad, there is no characterization, the story were so bad it was insulting, the music sounds good but completely inappropriate for certain scene, and the most annoying thing were those hundred of meaningless still frame that absolutely add nothing to the film. The saddest realization to me was how on freaking hell this movie got an eight+, sitting on top of objectively good film like the wind rises? I know MAL were a bad mark to judge an anime, but its still insulting to know these kinda thing happen, my god.

Imagine characterization in the first film of a trilogy which is itself 1/20 of the whole saga

I get what your saying. I love Kizumonogatari, but only in the context of the entire trilogy. Despite my love for it, none of the individual parts work well as movies with a beginning, middle, and end. And given how short the runtime is for each film, it probably would’ve worked better combined and condensed into a single 2 hour and 45 minute movie. Part One is ONLY setup with no payoff, so I understand people who have little appreciation for it. But whenever I decide to watch Kizu, it’s always with the intent to binge the trilogy altogether.

Wind Rises was basically a very slow paced film about a man's struggles on wanting to build a plane during world war 2, a film which tried to paint the Japanese as the victims of the war
the visuals and animation were good as you should expect from a ghibli film
But the plot was a basic as usual.
if the the wind rises plot were basic, how on earth do you think this movie has a better plot lmao, araragi didn't even have any obligation to help kiss shot and willingly died (kinda) to save her, which obviously a bad guy? And still he did, on what merit? He doesnt even have any real motivation lol. And I'm pretty sure you rip off the wind rises synopsis from some wiki shit, cuz what you written were hilarious.

If you watched Bakemonogatari before kizu like you werw supposed to then you would know the reason as to why he saved Shinobu. He barely values his life and considers it below hers. That why he was talking about how he hoped to be reborn as a better person.

you literally pointed out the characterization that you missed. he helped kiss shot becuase he is a character who goes out of his way to help people if he sees them in trouble to the point that it negatively impacts his life, this is one of his most important characteristics that plays a major role throughout the entire story of monogatari. araragi is a very flawed character and making dumb decisions to help people is one of his flaws but it also can be his greatest asset. it was conveyed to you clearly within this movie lol you literally just proved my point of characterization but you couldn't read into it because you arent as smart as you think
"araragi is a very flawed character and making dumb decisions to help people is one of his flaws but it also can be his greatest asset" yup that sums up your definition of a good character, extremely disappointed tbh.

I take denji from csm, his whole dream life were sucks (especially if you stack him up against other shonen mc) but the series make it clear from the beginning that he grew up on a messed up place someone could be, simple things means everything to him, araragi on the other hand what kinda background does he have? I see none.
are you trolling? I can’t take you seriously anymore

This trilogy of movies is made by needlessly stretching 1 novel into 3 movies. No wonder it feels like nothing happened in this movie because it was needlessly streched out to make more money. It's extremely badly made in my opinion. I personally consider it the worst part of Monogatari. I would highly recommend reading the book over watching the movie otherwise a lot of stuff in it would just not make sense.

The TV series is extremely well adapted though and very faithful to the books. I would highly recommend the TV series as it's an amazing anime series in my opinion.
appreciated your opinion mate, a lot of people seem to missing my whole point in this thread. I'm not shitting monogatari as a series, i'm just pointing how bad this particular movie is, especially by looking at its scores, this basically an empty shell, visually appealing but have big nothing inside. And i agree about this story needlessly stretch into 3 part movie, it will work better(narratively) as a series or even 1/2 part of long ass movie

You can’t shit on the movie if you haven’t watch bake first. The movie format means nothing, you won’t start an anime by episode 45, same goes with this trilogy.

I kinda feel ya. Watched Bake first then Kizu. The first Kizu movie was boring at times because of all the random down time. All the Kizu movies combined are pretty good though.

you've not watched the series, how do you think a character's actions would make sense if you started watching from a random arc of a long series. Its a part of his character to try to help everyone, a trait he has to pay a price for later on, multiple times, he even 'regrets' it in the further movies.

eh subjective criticism.

NisiOisiN's writing is outside the norm, Tatsuya Oishi's directing is outside the norm, & Shaft's style itself is outside the norm. And from what I can understand, you're not used to any of this. All the things you find "horrible," "annoying," "insulting," "meaningless" are precisely what make this movie so great, & what people love about it.

Your criticism about the story & characters are your own fault. This came out in 2016, meaning you're supposed to watch Bakemonogatari (2009), Nisemonogatari (2012), Nekomonogatari (2012), Monogatari Series: Second Season (2013), Hanamonogatari (2014), Tsukimonogatari (2014), and Owarimonogatari I (2015) before watching this. You have to at least watch until the end of second season to make any sense or reason out of this movie.

That watch order isn't even correct. The Kizu movies are supposed to be after Bakemonogatari if you go by light novel order that is. The Kizu movies were just delayed which caused this weird order.

It was originally planned to be released in 2012 I think, but that got scrapped for some reason, & Shaft turned this predicament into their advantage & released it just before Owarimonogatari 2nd season--the grand conclusion. There's value in watching Kizu after Monogatari 2nd Season & Tsuki, b/c you get to spend a lot more time with Araragi & Shinobu before learning about their pasts. And the ending of Kizu is perfectly juxtaposed with the ending of Owari 2nd season.

Shaft clearly intended that.

Just want to reiterate, my whole point is on what merit does this movie deserved to got 8.3+? In my perspective (and i'm pretty sure a lot of movie lovers out there), a movie should be judged as independently as possible, someone could watch the godfather part 1 without watching the second part and they still could enjoy the heck out of it (even if they will miss a grandeur resolution), cause the movie tells a COMPLETE story on its own. Now tell me, judged INDIVIDUALLY, what does Kizu part 1 does better(narrative and character wise, kizu got that visual tho) than a freaking Princess kaguya (the ghibli one) or the wind rises? Rather than telling me to watch the series a dozen times, lets compare the quality trais shall we?
- does it tell a complete story on its own? (Big Nope)
- does it serve the purpose to poke its audience on further movies in the trilogy? (Subjective, For me its not, but For you maybe?)
- does it have a satisfying resolution as an opener of a trilogy? (BiGG Nope)
- does it have a good music? (Yes, it sounds good even though sometimes it didnt fit the mood)
- does it got THAT visual? (YES, it looks amazing)
I didnt intend in the slightest to hating the series, kizumonogatari might be the best trilogy in universe (hopefully so) but no one could convince me otherwise that this movie (part one) is such a bad, bad opener to a trilogy. Shaft should just split kizu LN into 2 movies, and imma done with this s**t. by making it into trilogy, they clearly wanted to feed their family down to the freaking 7th generation lmao and sacrificing the break and continuity of what many said to be a good story. Different alternative could be by merging the rating of all 3 movies, cause every monogatari fans here seems to be fixated that this should be judged as a whole. The rating on this site tend to be misleading to a newcomer who only watch anime for quality entertainment.

Yall be capping hard to give this a 9 or 10. somebody could gave this movie a 7 at best, that is when he/she high as f**k

Why do you care so much about the movie format?? Did you know some parts like tsukimonogatari were broadcast on tv in traditional episode format and shaft stacked all 4 episode into 1 movie in the BD version. (I think so, bcause this is what you get from Crunchyroll and other streaming services). And I don't think the movie is still in theater, so you're basically complaining for nothing.

You complained about the movie's MAL score, & how it's unfairly rated higher than "objectively" better movies. That's why I felt the need to say your criticism is subjective.

> and for goddamn 100th time tell me what make this movie good lmao
The team at Shaft took a forty second flashback from Bakemonogatari & expanded it into a now fan-favorite trilogy. That's impressive in its own right, but they didn't just expand it, they added a wealth of nuance & meaning to a character dynamic that was already established to be nuanced & meaningful. The writing is unsurprisingly amazing, with charming, playful dialogue that'll keep the audience glued to the screen with a smile on their faces. The directing is ridiculously innovative, with impressive CG integration, great sound design, & inspired shot compositing. I could go on, but you clearly hate this movie, & I don't think I can change your mind with anything I say.

One other thing, though. You made the point somewhere that this movie can't stand on its own without the other two--which isn't entirely the case, b/c see above, but I'll leave you with this: In an ideal utopian world, Shaft would've released Kizu as a TV series with the same production quality, and this issue wouldn't exist. But this isn't an ideal utopian world. They had to battle a hellish production quagmire in getting these movies released. Oishi & his team took painstaking efforts to put a quality product in front of their audience. Obviously, the trilogy isn't perfect; the movie format somewhat ruins the flow, but that format allows for far more creative freedom, which the team took full advantage of. Saying it can't stand on its own without watching the other two movies is unreasonable, & a bit silly.

now , we have an argument to boot

1. "The team at Shaft took a forty second flashback from Bakemonogatari & expanded it into a now fan-favorite trilogy. but they didn't just expand it, they added a wealth of nuance & meaning to a character dynamic that was already established to be nuanced & meaningful. The writing is unsurprisingly amazing, with charming, playful dialogue that'll keep the audience glued to the screen with a smile on their faces." - first of all, i believe kizu was originated from LN aint it? Not a mere 40 secs. Flashback? Second, What kinda nuance and meaning are you refering to? When we first introduced to araragi, the first thing he did was staring at tsubasa boobs and thighs. we didnt even have a proper reasoning on why tsubasa personally taken a liking to him, the movie should at least gave us a proper insight into what kinda character tsubasa is, so i could make a goddamn sense on why she willingly help araragi. And dont even mention the writing, it AWFUl, why did araragi help kiss shot in the first place lmao?, Tsubasa already warned him about a vampire, and he, fully knowing that kiss shot is indeed the vampire, gladly gave his life to her, the bad guy, that he didnt even know exist an hour ago, really? You should tell me bout that, cause What a stupid, stupid of reasoning. To elaborate more, that stupid stunt araragi just pulled, is what gave the movie its conflict. You cant praise a story that build up by a stupid premise to be good, it didnt work that way

Yall be capping hard to give this a 9 or 10. somebody could gave this movie a 7 at best, that is when he/she high as f**k
i mean, just take a look at my point here

You cant praise a story that build up by a stupid premise to be good, it didnt work that way

>first of all, i believe kizu was originated from LN aint it? Not a mere 40 secs. Flashback?
lol figure of speech.

>the first thing he did was staring at tsubasa boobs and thighs
That scene was brilliant & hilarious. You're just suffering from a lack of taste in this case.

>why did araragi help kiss shot in the first place lmao?
Because Araragi is a person who can't prioritize himself over others, no matter what. He's impossibly selfless; it's his personality.

>fully knowing that kiss shot is indeed the vampire, gladly gave his life to her, the bad guy
She's not the "bad guy." Her personality & backstory are complex, saying more would be a spoiler.

> You cant praise a story that build up by a stupid premise to be good, it didnt work that way
The premise is only stupid if you know nothing about the characters.

>that was straight up gibberish you just put there. You should learn more about the meaning of "stand on its own" from your mama
Better not to say anything if you can't come up with a counter argument.
