Why did Vermeil seem so weak despite being some kind of all powerful ancient demon?

She honestly just ended up being a magic battery for Alto most of the time instead of an actual combat familiar. She constantly let people get the drop on her, and even when she was in rage-out demon form Alto was still able to intercept a killing blow meant for Obsidian, so her attack speed even while bloodlusted is super slow. I really expected her to get a chance to pop off and be a badass for a bit but they kept giving the spotlight to Alto, with Vermeil judt standing behind him doing nothing. It's kinda disappointing.
