It sounds kinda weird to me since they are of the same age and have no social hierarchy over each other. Btw, Gojou speaks casually with his grandfather, so he's not incapable of it either. |

| He likely uses it as he kinda looks down on himself due to having a hobby he perceives as shameful or not fitting him. As such he distanced himself during a long time though school. When the anime picks up, it is likely that this is the first meaningful relationship he has developed since maybe elementary school. As such he is unsure how to conduct himself. He chooses formal because it is safer of the 2 forms. He additionally don't want to annoy people around him and as such uses formal to not offend people new to him. He also at the beginning perceives himself as of lower value compared to Kitagawa-san. Disclaimer: This is my own opinion based on my experience with both the manga and anime. |

| Simple reason: That is how his character is, like being very formal and polite. He is not much social with other people, except his grandfather, since childhood. |

Btw, Gojou speaks casually with his grandfather, so he's not incapable of it either. probably cus he's new and doesn't know them, it's hard for english only speakers to imagine cus there's not really a "respectful" dialect for english but in most langauges that have it, from my experience, when meeting strangers the respected form is used despite of age this would track, you would use polite until a social cue let's you know they're cool with you not doing that and wpuldn't be something he's especially good at doing. |

| i agree with the other comments but yeah it pisses me off how marin is always like chou yaba~ and using all informal talk while hes always so polite like bruh shut the fuck up speak normally. and then its like marin doesnt even notice it, normally in shows like this the girl would say that he doesnt have to be so formal |
