| It's not exactly original, but as simple and somewhat cliche it is, it's fairly good horror-wise. Solid 6/10. Oshikiri Rensuke's distinct "ugly" art-style shines through the horror genre when he creates facial distortions or expressions of fear, rage, insanity, etc. The mystery of sudden deaths of Norio's family dying was very entertaining. The unclear sudden change of Grandma's demeanor being back to her original self, not senile anymore and somehow be knowledgeable with spirits was kinda random for being unexplained, but at the point in which she fought the Spirit Sayuri and influenced Norio to be strong was fun. The battle of mental strength to not die from weakness, to Sayuri's origin and being killed by her family for beating them with a bat as a depressed shut-in, throughout Grandma's spite of mocking Sayuri as a weak jealous girl, kidnapping Sayuri's family to torture while Sayuri brings out the corpses of Norio's family was awesome. The subtle romance with the classmate who can feel spirits and envision what they've done was ok, but it's part of theme in the end to live life strong and move on with new dreams. I personally enjoyed the horrific moments the most, especially after the Grandma exposes Sayuri ...but the main theme of the story's message afterwards is a nice touch. |
