Surprisingly good for a movie made from a shonen action show, although the TV series was turning in better stories than it used to around this time as well.
Also pretty scary for a kid's movie. The scene where Nube is beaten by his students was pretty harsh just for being willing to get so bloody.
It also had good pacing, a number of striking images (the whole scene where Jun first puts on the mask, the demon hand scratching the clown mask, Nube pressing though the mirror), and a sense of restraint and drama; I appreciate that Nube didn't end up fighting a towering monster across the whole city but instead the representation of a boy's loneliness just in the deserted halls of the school. The simplicity and intimacy make for a better horror story.
My only complaint is that the trick with the mannequin was too obvious. Maybe if the mannequin hadn't been shown in such good light it would have been more believable that it was actually Nube. I'm also not sure if Jun was supposed to have filled his own shoes with sand.
I also want to point out what a great job Toshiko Fujita did voicing Hiroshi in the scene where he scalds his leg. It sounded exactly like a child on the verge of crying from pain but trying to hold it back. |
