In a roundabout way, my kid is the reason I watch anime, not the other way around as I'm sure is the case with many parents.

For years, we mostly just had the TV on to keep him entertained here and there as ya do, but I didn't really get invested in any shows. Right when lockdown hit, we started watching My Little Pony (yes, I'll admit, I'm also a Brony). We watched it a lot together, got immersed. That's when I really started to get into animation, and allowed myself to be enthusiastic and be part of a fandom, whereas in years past I would've looked down on it.

So, I came to this later than most. It was that acceptance and new found love of animation that eventually served as a gateway drug to anime. It had always existed on the periphery. I recall enjoying watching Sailor Moon when I was little, and remembering my dad would make fun of it when my sister and I watched it. I knew some people who liked anime when I was growing up, and even in my teens and early 20's, and admittedly I found it interesting, but I never allowed myself to get into it.

Maybe my son will get more into it, maybe not. But I guess revisiting animation with him allowed me to tap back into something that was probably always there.

Feel free to share any of your experiences.

No worries about the brony thing. I'm a pegasister myself! At least the first 2 seasons of Friendship is Magic.

Since you're new to animation will you tell me what other shows you've watched? (Non-anime) I've always been into animation so maybe I'll have some recommendations for you.

Ah, nice! I'm really into the first four seasons of FiM and a bit here and there after that, and I really got into Equestria Girls, too. Never enough to go to a con or anything, but I still consider myself a fan despite anime kind of taking over.

Umm, I'm trying to think of shows I actually really liked other than MLP/EG. I really liked Word Girl when I watched it with him, that's a clever one. I mean I did the usual Simpsons/South Park/Family Guy thing many years ago. I watch a lot of YouTube, and Saberspark has tipped me off to some stuff. Are you into Helluva Boss?

I am into Helluva Boss. How'd you guess? ;p

Ok here just what I can think of off the top of my head:

Invader Zim
Gravity Falls
Samurai Jack
Dexter's Lab
Powerpuff Girls
Over the Garden Wall
Primal (Maybe too mature for your son)

If I think of more I'll post them. :)

How could I forget Adventure Time and Steven Universe?

I used to love Dexter's Lab and Powerpuff Girls! Is it back or are you talking the original?

Thanks for the recommendations! There are definitely some I'm familiar with but haven't really delved into. I shall!

I've always enjoyed animation over live action, as well as children's illustration. I originally went to college with the intention of becoming a children's illustrator. So animation, and anime have sortof always been a part of my life.

If you're looking for recommendations for non-anime animation, some movies I really liked are The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea. Coraline is also really well-done if you like stop motion animation.

Have you seen The Breadwinner by the same studio or guy (idk) as The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea?

Looks like there's another one, Wolfwalkers, which I haven't seen yet but will have to remember to watch sometime.

No, actually, I haven't seen either of those. My husband mentioned something about Wolfwalkers to me this morning, though.

I'm going to have to see both of those. The animation is so pretty.
