| It does, but it takes some liberties. The main character does not exist and some of the plot points and the narrative themes surrounding her do not exist, but all the major events are there. The Heike clan never knew of their fate beforehand from a girl seer, for example… much less take in a girl from the streets (as far as I can recall. It’s been a while since I read the legend) However, the story has different versions as well and has been retold dozens of time— depending on the source, some events are/aren’t there and those that are there lead to different outcomes. Kind of like Goldilocks and the Three Bears: In one version, the bears scare Goldilocks and she runs away, but in another, the bears are friendly and tell her to come back after she goes home and visit. For this reason, it’s not that big of a deal who is or isn’t there in the anime because it’s just another retelling of it. |
