why is the rating so low for the anime? was the adaptation really bad?
should i just read the manga instead?

I haven't read the manga but I'd say just read it, the adaptation feels incomplete and season 2 even ends with a "To Be Continued" despite there being no season 3.

Also the animation is mediocre

it’s fun, an easy follow. i enjoyed it- unfortunately I don’t think it’s had enough of a following for a third season
