I haven't seen it yet so please no explicit spoilers, but for context:

I watched season 1 of Log Horizon a few years ago and loved it. I thought the civ-building aspect of it as well as Shiroe's strategizing his way through politics and running a city were fascinating and the fact that it was an MMO felt more relevant in this than it did in its contemporaries.

I saw another thread saying people weren't liking season 3 because it was focusing exclusively on politics (after the first 3 episodes) but that confused me because the politics and dialogue I thought were the series' selling point.

From what I know, the anime does not heavily deviate from the source material in season 3 (though I'd like confirmation on how accurate of a statement that is), so my question is: why did people not like season 3 as much, and from what I've just shared, would you recommend I watch it or not?

Because people are idiots who either missed or forgot the entire premise of the show. It’s worth the watch if you truly enjoy log horizon.

I really loved Season 1 of this series , later on the story gets a bit too just "political" and slow paced
Even if politics is the main selling point the MC is a good strategist when it comes to fights so I was expecting at least few battles under his command but it was mostly just him doing the "protect home base" while others fight for u , yes there were 1 or 2 fights where mc joined but that was the max , I wanted to see some fast paced thinking to make strategies from the best strategist of this game but nope
So yea there that's my opinion , some may agree some may not but that's what I think

Yeah this was it for me. I watched seasons 1 and 2 several years back and thought they were great, and then watched this season as it came out. I think for me it mainly came down to feeling like it was paced way too slowly. Most of the arcs this season (its kinda broken into three for this season if I remember) just couldn't grab my interest and one of then let down my expectations for something I had been waiting for this story to expound upon.

Probably because most fans hate politics in an anime or probably because of how they presented this one. (but seriously, only some does), and you can't really surmise everyone's preference so this question is pretty much invalid and I actually liked this.

This was probably overshadowed since it has been a long time since the 2nd season was animated iirc but I am still glad we have this season animated.

I was actually expecting 2 seasons like the 1st and 2nd season.
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

I didn't like this season because it didn't feel like any significant progress was made. At the end of S2 we were left with a pretty clear goal, which was to contact the people on the moon and figure out a way to leave the game. What we got this season was a political arc that ultimately changed nothing, a mini-arc about what crusty was up to all this time, which ultimately changed nothing, and a raid arc that came out of nowhere and ultimately changed nothing. We got some character developments and a few more world building tidbids, but we didn't learn anything that feels significant, and we're not a single step closer to the moon. It felt like 12 episodes of nothing but distractions, and that's very unsatisfying after a 7 year wait.

Log Horizon had a fantastic first 12 episodes in S1. There was a lot of tension as the playerbase was transported to an unknown world and society was broken, and people were forming alliances and trying to gain an advantage in the new world. The second half of S1 was less intense but still interesting enough with the players trying to open relations with the nearby NPC kingdom.

S2 is when the show started going off the rails. Shiro's storyline in the first half of S2 where he is trying to raid a vault is okay, but whatever filler that was happening with Akatsuki back at the town was utterly boring. And then towards the end of S2, the POV shifts to people in China we don't care about, and some random evil catlady is introduced at the end being setup as the main villain, and I just don't care.

S3 is called "Destruction of the Roundtable". The title promises a return to the intensity of the first half of S1. The destruction of Akihabra's government, the unraveling of society, acrimony, friendships broken, rival factions being formed, etc. Unfortunately what we got was anything but. There is a minor kerfuffle in the first 5 episodes and then things are back to business as usual. After episode 5, we get YET ANOTHER DETEOUR TO CHINA following that party I don't care about.

At least this time Crusty - I character I do care about - is involved so I am somewhat vaguely interested. Crusty's story sets up the interesting idea that he is gradually losing his memories, a way to set up character tension in a world where players are immortal, but then he doesn't lose anything important to him and gets the memories he lost back.

Then we get more slice of life fluff back at town, and I just don't care. The show also wastes time with the Minori subplot, who is once again going "should I confess to Shiro?" and the date scene, which is rehash of literally the same exact set of events from the prior seasons. Then some random demon lord of the week begins invading the season, and I tuned out.

Watch season 1 and never touch the sequels.
