One thing is certain: I won't watch this thing. I always found value in "Strike Witches", but this... is simply defeating the whole purpose of the series. Seriously? An idol anime in the middle of a World War? With random J-POP on top i bet, with copied/pasted lyrics about friendship, the value of smiles that can save the future, or how love gives litteral wings to soar up to the moon... gosh... And they said they are desperately lacking Witches on the frontlines. But who cares, any logic can be bent when it comes to churning out a new idol anime. Note that i don't despise of care about idol animes. It is just that you can't just pop new ones everywhere any time you are bored or lack ideas. Some franchises and backgrounds fit the bill, others just don't. Right now, the producers feel like Disney milking Star Wars. Expect quantity, not relevance. |

Or are you personally not interested in such a show? I give you a hint: only the third one makes sense It is the 4th. The one that should be obvious. Looks like i have to force opened doors... So be it. We all know how stars like Hepburn went on the frontlines to entertain soldiers. Although this is a very American thing to do that hardly has any equivalent in the world. But here is not the point. If they had given us the story about random artists that feel involved in the war effort and try to help anyway they can by entertaining soldiers, i would have applauded. Loudly. We would have seen the setting through the perspective of the backlines. Women who were never witches, renowned artists that feel more useful doing what they are best at. Their perspectives and feelings regarding the War and those who fight on the frontlines would have been a wonderful addition to the "Strike Witches" franchise. But that is not what this anime is. This anime is merely an excuse to bring yet another variation on idols. In animes, we have seen pro idols, amateur idols, school idols, magic idols, rock idols, underage idols, and so many others. But the producers just thought... "Gosh! nobody ever made idols in striker units ! genius ! money !" They are Disney milking Star Wars. This anime won't try to develop the setting or to bring anything to the table. The idols will tell us that they will save the world with crappy lyrics rather than guns, and that smiles and friendship will forge a happy tomorrow or whatever shallow lyrics J-POP loves so much. And they will have massive success in Europe too (omg). That is what idols animes are like. And sometimes it is not so horrible. There are a place and time for everything after all. But what makes it an annoyance to me, is that it contradicts the setting. I am sure there are plenty of girls in this setting without magic to fulfill their japanese idol fantasies without having to wear strikers just because nobody did it before. Even Miyafuji had to conclude that the only way her magic could help was not even by healing but by fighting, and that she was needed on the frontlines much more than in a clinic. S1 episode 2 is actually very well written and demonstrates this truth while leaving no place whatsoever for further doubts in anyone's mind. I expect these girls born with magic to tell me that they really want to help, and that indeed, singing J-POP is how they really are useful. Because as in every idol anime, bringing smiles to the world is so damn powerful... How can anyone fail to see how cretinous this is in such a setting ? I don't even get started about how japanese values are only japanese values. "do you think soldiers shouldn't be entertained?" If you can't see the massive difference there is between a series that tackle this interesting topic and yet another idol anime, there is nothing more i can tell you. There are reasons why idols only work in Japan and Korea. There are reasons why nobody will consider comforting an incapacitated veteran by saying "Smile and tomorrow will be bright!". I can't find better words to describe how an idol anime in "Strike Witches" is just plain distasteful. |

Does it really want to occupy a niche? There is a reason why there are plenty of 'idol animes' and hardly any 'idol film' in comparison. The niche you talk about is more a hangar than dog housing (do know what 'niche' originally means? This was a pun, but np if you don't understand :p). The target for animes and the target for idols always was pretty much the same. So, making an anime and chosing the idol theme for the anime is hardly making a niche product. It is even less niche when you consider the fetishes surrounding SW and those surrounding idols in Japan. On top of that, SW was a big thing when it started there. I don't know where the phenomenom is in 2021. But SW was meant to be anything BUT niche from the start. And idol animes, again, tend to be anything BUT niche, too, as they promote extremely mainstream products (idols). Mixing both seems to me like the best way to make SW the opposite of niche again in 2022. But it being niche or not is irrelevant at the end of the day. I am talking about how making idol animes is the easiest way out for uninspired producers, and how the theme of idols doesn't fit in the SW world in particular. And i take these for facts, not opinions. Especially after the franchise adopted a more serious tone with the film in 2012. Whether there are some people who still wish to find for themselves potential 2D waifus in strikers singing the last forgettable J-POP shit in a 1945 war context is something else entirely. I don't. And my 'non-existent impressions' won't be dispeled by your 'non-existent answer', considering that it misses the point again by a fair margin, like American bombing in Europe in 1944. |

I never said they were bad shows, they are all average including Gourmet Girl Graffiti. It's just that we've been getting average after average show since 2017-2018 when the final part of Monogatari and March Comes in Like a Lion were released. 3+ years of nothing impressive. I'm aware Shinbo isn't getting as involved with the new shows, and it shows. It really shows. All shows used to go through Shinbo's approval. The creative genius and search for perfection aren't there nowadays. I've heard he's coming back as the director for the new Madoka movie. It just seems that Shaft is lost without Shinbo. He's already 60, I hope Shaft finds someone that can take his place. |

anikevin said: I never said they were bad shows, they are all average including Gourmet Girl Graffiti. My point is that the studio has always produced such shows from time to time. This is how the industry works, especially when a show like 3-gatsu sells three times worse than a show like assault lily. anikevin said: Well, they didn't produce anything in 2019 at all - they only worked on individual episodes.3+ years of nothing impressive. anikevin said: I'm aware Shinbo isn't getting as involved with the new shows, and it shows. It really shows. Not quite that. He's not involved with the luminous witches or assault lily at all. He's a little involved in the magia record. And he was definitely hugely involved with Bishounen tanteidan, and it shows. It really shows. I don't know why you were not impressed and why you think this show was average. It wasn't. And if you take a closer look at these latest shows, you might notice the rise to the fore of a new generation of studio directors - very interesting ones. |

You seem to be invested into Studio Shaft too. Are you happy with the direction the studio is taking? I saw the key visual for this anime and I can't help but feel underwhelmed. It looks like the image for an average idol show (Not that idol shows are inherently bad). It just looks ordinary. When I think of Shaft I usually expect something to blow my mind. Maybe I should lower my expectations from now on. |

It looks like the image for an average idol show (Not that idol shows are inherently bad). It just looks ordinary. Look. This is a show by Saeki Shouji, not Shimbou. You know, how in the old days the studio had shows by the Shimbo team and separate collaborations with Gainax(which, by the way, Saeki also worked on) - it looks like a return to that kind of thing. And personally, I think this is a normal and healthy for the studio. Despite the fact that Saeki has worked on many great and cult titles, his personal aproach has always seemed to me more down-to-earth and servicy. He does what the producers need and want, and it's great for these kind of more commercial shows. anikevin said: When I think of Shaft I usually expect something to blow my mind. According to the people, who saw the first episode on the recent live concert, it was great. Surprisingly good in fact. Also, not only is Shaft still growing as a studio ( especially the new CG and background art divisions ), but also the focus on queer anime is a very good choice imo. Gay stuff is a much better fit for Shaft, so I actually hope they continue focusing on that |

What's going on Shinbo-sensei Shaft 5 years ago was the absolute GOAT as far as Im concerned, with an incredible track record all the way from Ef to Sagatsu no Lion. But ever since that mobile game spinoff for Madoka it feels like a different studio to me. And Im not even complaining about "milking" the franchise, its an original anime it has to pay off and if Shaft gets money through this Im all for it. I just hope Shaft isnt going down the Gainax road, even Trigger died off after a promising start. Anyway, is this supposed to be related to Strike Witches? Titles like Magia Record and Assault Lily have very good animation. While Assault Lily might not be as loved, but the animation is beautiful. Also it brings money to Studio. You can produce great shows like Sangatsu and go bankrupt, or do some unpopular shows that bring money, along with doing great shows. West might hate Magia Record, but kudos to Shaft finishing the anime despite production issues. It also paved way for next Madoka Magica Movie, which is nice. You might have opinion that these are shows that nobody watches, but Bluray sales speak a different story. Also no-name studios don't have Sakuga. Shaft is also doing RWBY anime, which is again an exciting project to look forward to. They have two great talented animators: Hiroto Nagata and Kazuki Kawada, and having seen their works, I'm positive that Shaft is still among the top studios in terms of peak animation. |

The World Witches team put together some surprisingly fantastic shows. I went into Strike Witches with my anti-loli-defences up, but the series has a whole lot going on with some really distinct and fun characters, as well as an ability to build some proper tension into the (pretty darn good) fight sequences and overarching plot. It's also from the cheerful rather than creepy side of fanservice, where all the girls are in the joke so to speak, especially a certain Flight Sergeant Miyafuji. Looking forward to Luminous Witches to see what they do with this spin-off! |
