I don't understand why are the ratings so low like the animation is good, the characters are decent, and the plot is interesting to be honest. One more thing am I the only one who is confused why no one is talking about this show in the mainstream

People don't have good taste I guess 🤪
nah it could be that before the season started it was labelled as the 3rd cloverworks show because it's not like the show dropped in popularity it was pretty unknown since ep1
anyway don't really care I'm enjoying it. it's the best new anime this season 7/10 for me

I get what u mean it's a bit predictable and formulaec but still solid.
but the fact of the matter is that even when compared to the other new shows of the season I would say that it's pretty ahead of the rest.

Dress up darling is gorgeous in its character designs but just passing in the story and character depth(for a show that aimed to be thematic from ep1)

sabikui bisco is great but don't really know how it's gonna run with the story because a s2 looks pretty unlikely

not counting sequels and akebi is just a normal sol so......yeah Tokyo 24-ku takes the cake

Yeah it's not spectacular but I don't think it deserves a sub 7.00 score, many will definitely see it as boring but you can't exactly call it trash either

It's probably low because since it is a rather unpopular show, it certainly is down the list with just about 39k members here on MAL. And since it hasn't really gained traction, it's only watched by a seemingly niche group of people, who search high and low for in the seasonal anime for hidden gems... like me! But with people like me who search for this stuff, we're probably a bit more critical towards certain anime than the general audience who most likely are more accepting. That's why really popular anime can be rated high, even though they aren't exactly masterpieces

So since it has a smaller audience, and since that audience is mostly composed of people who generally are more critical toward anime (again, broadly speaking, don't want to judge), it's bound to have a lower score than your typical 7-8 range.

And the thing that shook me more is that The "Strongest Sage With the Weakest Crest" anime has 97k members. Even though Tokyo ward 24 is way better than that.

6.93 is indeed a little too low rating.

Honestly i thought this anime had potential, but week after week he gets more and more boring. I like the mystery and the superhero plot, but the rest and the drama.....i have no words.

Aside Shuuta and all the support chars, Ran and Koki are unlikable in a level that i don't know what to think about it. I'm watching for what works well here, and cause i still have faith that the history will find it's way from this middle point, but till here the two "antagonic" protagonists (Red and Green) are making this anime a 6/10 to me.

Still, from a critical point of view, i think that Tokyo 24-ku deserves more attention than some pieces this season.

I'm wondering why the ratings are low as well. The show isn't anyhting special, but it does enough stuff right to be above 7 imo. I'd give it like 7.20. Well CloverWorks are doing a good job for now this season given that they have 3 anime going on.

Because its not "hype." Most people label it as basic.

But it is interesting. At least compared to the other 2 shows Cloverworks is adapting.

You answered your own question with that last sentence.

The anime community is a perfect place to observe the bandwagon fallacy in action. Things that are popular become more popular and praised extensively, even when the shows in question are clearly awful - just look at shite like Demon Slayer and Attack on Titan, whilst things that slipped under the radar on the first sweep get abandoned, even when they're clearly much better.

What actually seals the fate of a show isn't its quality, but whether it got advertised at the right time to the right people.
Well I for one already loved Lain.

(i’m not quite caught up yet) The first 40 minute episode took me multiple days to finish because it seemed boring or I just lost interest however once I got past it, it became like a solid 7/10 from what I watched.

I don't think it's a low rating. I think according to the MAL rating system 6 is labeled as fine. I just believe people have started making 7 the new 5. Everything is a 7 nowadays. So, in my opinion 6 is still a decent show. Also this show has an awesome plot but for some reason refuses to use it to its full potential and that makes the show hard to watch at times.

I like the show but even I do find quite a lot of parts boring and needlessly heavy. A ton of anime viewers don’t like boring and it will factor in on their decision to either continue watching or drop it all together, leaving a low rating while they’re at it.

Not helping the boring aspects of Tokyo 24-ku is the fact it’s an original series. It doesn’t have a built-in fanbase of anime adaptations like ‘Sabikui Bisco’ (which is based on a LN published by Kadokawa) and ‘My Dress Up Darling’ (which is based from a manga that’s published by Square Enix - this show is also one of CloverWorks’ productions too). Due to that, it wasn’t able to attract eyeballs like the two mentioned newbie shows can.

To be clear here, original anime can be hella great (see Great Pretender, SK8, Evangelion). However, given the insane amount of anime CloverWorks is putting out this year alone, I have a feeling that whatever resources they could’ve dedicated for this original show, it’s likely that those resources were given to the other (more profitable, publisher-backed) IPs they’re working on.

In the end, I really can’t help but feel that if the studio had more time and resources to refine and further bake Tokyo 24-ku, it could have been really good. Thing is, it definitely felt like it wasn’t on their priority list to give it the attention and care it deserves.
