I think it was figuratively. And this dude is funny for saying something like that equates to a “plot hole.” Which now plot holes have lost their meaning because apparently every show has a plot hole. But anyway, I think it was just something he was saying to make her feel better. Like “I’m always going to be there for you.” That’s not literal, neither was he being literal.

You people will do anything to hate on SAO. Nobody on this app knows what a plot hole is.

He just lied, and kirito was trying to reassure alice during her moments of weakness. Yeah, it becomes pointless once she becomes all powerful again if you are overly literal and cynical about every little thing, but damn, you don't have to go so far.

I understand the figure of speech. Calling it a plot hole was pretty absent minded of me. It just seems intentional that he’s never on her blind side.
