I've heard that Lupin III is pretty unconnected in terms of story. Will it be fine to start from this part or is there overarching things I'll need to know about?

Yes you can! but every part have cameos or reference from the part that came before (for example part V have a lot of references from part IV), so I recommend you at least watch part V

It's hard to know yet if this'll make call backs/have any connection to the previous parts but yes: you can start lupin from any part of the franchise. Part 4 and 5 so far are the only parts of Lupin that *have* to be watched in order because of continuity.

I personally recommend to watch Part 4 & 5 before starting this if you're a new viewer to the franchise.

I would say read a few of the mangas, would definitely help you get acquainted with the greatest antihero of all time.

You probably can. Lupin and the crew are kinda meant to be a bit timeless, so you can probably grasp the characters pretty easily.
As always, I totally recommend just watching the first Lupin as it's only 23 episodes and should give you a great idea of what to usually expect out of the franchise. ( https://myanimelist.net/anime/1412/Lupin_III ) You probably won't have to in order to understand what's happening though. A quick wiki check should get you up to date if you're ever super confused. Or that's what the discussion board is for sometimes. Just ask us why x or y and we'll probably help you... or watch you suffer depending on who you get.

As some mentioned, there might be references to previous installments, but in general you should be able to understand the overall plot and such unless they pull a fast one on us and somehow make part 6 here a continuation of some sort. Actually, I guess the last part actually did have something pretty important, so I can't say everything I've typed will be the case, but USUALLY that's how it is.

thewrll recommends the manga, but it's important to note that the anime changes Lupin to be more palatable to the public.

Of course, but if I were you, I would start with the very first season which you enter into the universe of Lupin, as the seasons go by, you will discover a new side and the connections of each character, the second season is the best, even if the design is a bit old it's always a joy to watch these episodes and even if there are 155 it goes extremely quickly, done as you see fit, but this new season would never be as good as the first three.

Well, seeing as part 6 isn't out yet, I can't say. But you probably could, just like all the previous parts. (I would recommend seeing part 4 & 5 tho)

Edit: I would definitely recommend watching Lupin III, Castle of Cagliostro if you're new to the franchise!! Great starting point and beautiful animation! Lupin III: the first, is also a great! Both are movies so you won't have to watch a ton of episodes if you're short on time.

As long as you have a basic understanding of the main characters you'll most likely be fine starting with this part. With that said you'd really be doing yourself a disservice to not watch part's 4 and 5 as they are both fantastic. I also highly recommend the woman called fujiko mine. It's in another timeline and won't be apart of the story for part 6 but it is a great starting point to introduce the characters.

As others here have mentioned, it's hard to say how connected this will be to parts 4 and 5, which did have some connections. Since you have plenty of time before Part 6 comes out, I would say to use that time to familiarize yourself with the franchise. Watch the Cagliostro movie and maybe a few episodes from amongst the first three seasons and I would also recommend watching all of part 4 and part 5 before this season, since part 4 sort of acted as a reboot to the franchise and the sequels seem to be on a trend of being connected.

Once you have familiarized yourself and you want to see more, there are plenty of movies, specials, and spin-offs that you can watch.

If I were you I'd start with the highest highs of the series rather than go into this blind. As much as I love Lupin the quality of stuff can vary greatly.

You could start with this, yes, but I'd recommend watching at least a few movies first or some popular episodes of the older series' to see if you even dig it.

You probably don't need to watch prior seasons, but part 4 is pretty good, and I would definitely recommend watching part 5 as in my opinion that is the best Lupin season so far (for me 10/10).

Nah, for example for part 5 you really don't need to watch part 4. In part 5, part 4's main heroine makes an appearance like once or something, and does not play a crucial role. I only watched part 4 and 5.

I am just saying part 4 and especially part 5 are worth watching, they are relatively new, so art is not old as well.

Part V pulls from Part IV in some small ways, and the series is always full of throwbacks to past episodes, but I think people are sorta overthinking this. Unless Part VI turns out to be a MAJOR shift in the show's set format, you can absolutely start with it. It's an adventure series with no overarching plot, no need to think too hard about its continuity.

It IS worth going back to watch older Lupin stuff, but hardly necessary to enjoy what's coming out now.

I've read this about Lupin, PreCure and Gundam, but for some reason Gundam is the only one that people recommend the release order for.

Like others said, part IV and V are worth watching to get yourself familiarized with the current style of the series. But even within these seasons there are quite a few stand-alone episodes that have nothing to do with the overarching plot of those seasons.

And of course Castle of Cagliostro is a great fun story.

If you're looking for darker (more r-rated) stories check out:
- Lupin the IIIrd: Jigen Daisuke no Bohyou
- Lupin the IIIrd: Chikemuri no Ishikawa Goemon
- Lupin the IIIrd: Mine Fujiko no Uso

3 movies, each a length of 2 episodes. Where Lupin's companions (Jigen, Goemon and Fujiko) get a bigger spotlight.

I wouldn't be surprised if we get another Zenigata and final Lupin one in this "series".

Because Gundam is mostly connected whilst the others aren't.

Because the first few seasons of Gundams all build upon each other. I'm currently watching through Zeta and a lot of the story has frequent and important callbacks to what happened in the original series, with a lot of the story and character development building upon what happened in the original without really even attempting to give context for newcomers.

Also, a couple prequel OVAs have come out since, but they attempt to explain stuff like Char's motivation in the original series, or what happened between the original and Zeta, which are both better to NOT know beforehand, since knowing is kind of a spoiler.

Lupin doesn't do that, since the older shows are pretty episodic without much in the way of overarching story. PreCure takes it a step further, and has every season be essentially a reboot that is unrelated to the others.

"Can I start a series with the newest installment?" Do you start books in the middle too?

Watch Parts 4-5 since those are directly Preceding this one. Parts 1-3 are 99.9% episodic except the part where characters are introduced in Part 1.

I really think watching part V will be pretty good enough for to get the most out of for the next future parts as after all it features Lupin with all jackets represented in past 50 years together and have the modern anime style pacing with overarching story telling approach.

Some Gundam are standalones (Seed, 00, IBO and etc) just like Precures. But the rest of them, the most popular one, are a big continuation named as "(earlier) Universal Century", comprised of 0079, Zeta, ZZ and CCA and some spinoffs in between.
You can start watching any standalones if you are interested.

start with 2015 series, 2018. 2021.

Thats good enough imo, I never watched the older series and you don't need too right away.

yes, the stories of each season are not really related at all, usually in a season 1 or 2 characters from previous stuff show up for a brief while, but don't have too big of a role

although I would recommend watching part 5, as in my opinion that is the best Lupin IIIrd season
for me part 6 is not quite living up to it so far

part 4 (Lupin III 2015) is pretty good too, I only saw the new stuff, part 5 > part 4 > part 6 would be my ranking currently

also Lupin III: The First is a 3D-ish movie, which is quite good, it is very good looking, I would say close to Disney quality

Gundam only has this for one timeline where its a literal series thats pick off eachother in a linear order, anyone saying otherwise is lying cause by design pretty much every show releast from the early 90's onward is standalone though it does do both reliance and subversions of tropes to the stuff released before 1990. To really put it in perspective how little of the series is really gatekept behind past entries, its just 079 < zeta < ZZ < CCA < unicorn and thats it, Thats still alot of content but an absurdly small amount of the franchise overall

Lupin in contrast is just standalone all throughout with very easy to pick up characterization that you could hypothetically start in the middle of pretty much any part or random movie and still follow it just fine. Its just a sandbox for whatever the hell story the various creators wants to tell with those basic but fun characters be it supernatural, sci fi, or grounded or whatever the fuck it wants to be.
