As some might have suspected, it was all an illusion of sorts. It actually is very similar to a book by Brandon Sanderson, called Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds. We find out in this episode that Lupin was really trapped in a high-tech illusion of sorts with Goemon, and the people who trapped him were using him to try to get him to tell them a password. Thankfully, he figured it out in time to both stop them and to get out of the illusion.

While it wrapped up a little too quickly in my opinion, I do like the creativity in this episode with the setting and characters. I also liked the reveal that the heir was actually a boy and not a girl. It makes the scene from the last episode funnier.

Next week continues the main storyline of the season! Lupin returns to London!

I hadn't gotten into it at first but so far this is a solid Lupin III season... next week we're getting back into the main story so fasten your seatbelts.

Yeah, I agree that it wrapped up a bit for my taste, though that's my only criticism with this episode. The way Lupin and Goemon were sent back was not what I had in mind, or how they'd make their return too. It was pretty neat all things considering.

Wasn't expecting the heir to be revealed as a boy, but hey, that's cool how he was able to play the part well I guess.

I also liked how Goemon went out of his way to see if the guy who looked like Jigen was actually him or not just like how Lupin and Goemon figured out they were stuck there together. Probably my favorite part about this episode.

Can't wait to see the next one!

It was not a very interesting two-parter, and as a cherry on top of the cake, it also had historical revisionism about the Imperial Japanese Army being some kind of liberatory force.

Sure, probably LDP supporter writing the episode, sure.

Though I have to admit the futuristic aspects to this scenario were actually kinda interesting.

These 2 episodes were an intense ride. Lots of clever writing throughout that definitely stands out for the fall season. Shame no one is watching.

So the Lupin time traveling adventure comes to a close as it turns out to be an illusion in order to force Lupin to give up the password. Basically this was a Lupin and Goemon episode as Lupin figured out the password to get back to the present with Goemon. It was a nice little mini arc and I wasn't surprised that the heir turned out to be a boy since its not uncommon to for members of the royal family to disguise themselves to avoid being targeted. Next week its back to the main plot as we find out what happened between Lupin and Holmes in London.

I think this episode was supposed to pull double duty. This episode existed as filler while the writers figured out how to plot the Holmes story. This episode was also a subtle flex that they can tell interesting stories any time they want. I liked this story altogether and would have enjoyed spending more time in the past.

Maybe the show wanted to clown the Imperial Japanese Army and the higher ups told the writers to relax. Or maybe all of our Lupin fan complaints changed the writers minds about extending this story out more. Either way, I hope the next episode delivers on the promise of that trailer. I am all for more serialized shenanigan's with the Lupin gang.

I actually compared the simulation to Abstergo and the Animus. Without the aliens.
I liked the little touch at the end that Lupin actually did travel backwards in time.

The vintage Lupin episode wrap-up had a really nice feeling to it. A big part of the Lupin series is reverence for the past while challenging it, as well as grappling with technology. I would've liked it if the characteristics of the original Ranpo characters were referenced a little more but I still really enjoyed both of these episodes as a fan of both Lupin and Ranpo's work.

Sad that we have to go back to Holmes' manpain next week even if I fully expected it.

To be honest I didn't find these last two episodes interesting at all, and because of that I'm happy we're returning to the main story line next week. Really weak plot in this two parter. It feels like I've seen elements of this stuff handled in a more interesting manner in previous seasons/OVAs. The action was also pretty underwhelming. Hoping the show returns back to form with the Raven stuff.

What a wonderful little two parter, I loved it. In fact this plot was a hell of a lot better than the Goodbye Partner special from 2019 that I loathed.

While I really want to just get back to the story already, this two parter was a lot of fun. The characters were a lot more likable here. The mystery was a lot of fun. I actually thought time travel would be the plot twist, not virtual reality.

Not a very well paced two-parter, but it's filled with reference to the Taisho-Showa era mystery novels:

The Edogawa Ranpo reference is a no-brainer,but do you know the Jigen look a like is also a reference? the character is of an author from the same time period as Ranpo, named Yamanaka Minetaro (山中 峯太郎).

Also, The Golden Mask in Edogawa Ranpo's work is actually also a Lupin, borrowing from the Arsène Lupin just as Monkey Punch did latter. And on top of that The Golden Mask's lover is named Fujiko, written the same way as the Fujiko we know, I am not making this shit up.

So I guess the ending scene is implying that similar event did happen in the past just with the past Lupin(the second maybe?) as the Golden Mask and all.

It's fun if you know a bit about those, but as its own story is a bit lacking, the "sorry, we ran out of time so we are forcing the ending " vibe is very strong.

Sure you can expect a lot of disguise in this show, but everything got fixed for Lupin and Goemon, really like that kind of illusion isekai technology.

You thought it was an isekai arc, when in reality it was a Rick and Morty simulation episode, all the way down to them trying to get a passcode out of Lupin...

I rewacthed The Imperial City, Dreams Of Thieves for the dub and I must say, although I was initially mostly disinterested in this two-parter, I now find it to be quite awful.

The concept is fun and very "Lupin" but the execution is imo terrible. The only highlight from both episodes 5 and 6 is the chase in the streets of 1930s Tokyo in the very beginning of episode 5 and maybe the 30 second fight between Goemon and au Jigen in episode 6. What should have been an exciting au story ended up being an absolute snoozefest that spends 3/4th of the runtime on sidecharacters I could not give less of a shit about. Instead of coming up with exciting set pieces, the two parter instead decides to spend most of it's runtime having the the sidecharacters talk to each other. Nothing exciting happens, I have zero reason to care about either the detective, the archeologist or her bodyguard, in fact the latter two are preety annoying, and the writers completely forget about au Fujiko and Zenigata. They even shove poor Fujiko in the end despite her having nothing to do and no motivation to be there. And au Jigen just follows the bad guy around. There's a train in episode 5 which I thought would be an excellent set piece for a chase, but instead Zenigata spots Lupin, the bad guy comes in and suddenly everyone forgets about Lupin and he leaves from the window! Like are you being serious? Such a colossal waste throughout...
