Well, there's a couple of problems with that.
1. The original author is dead.
2. Ghibli doesn't make sequels. I mean yeah, The Cat Returns is great. But nobody cares.

Yeah Ghibli aren’t one for sequels, save for The Cat Returns. Unlikely to happen. A lot of their adaptations had continuing stories and could’ve gone on, but they’ve been often avoided. Even their original stories have had sequel ideas dropped, Nausicaä and Totoro spring to mind.
