| I've seen it at Nippon Connection Film Festival in Frankfurt am Main, Germany and I was somewhat blown away by how distinctly Japanese it is. Like even as a studied Japanologist I had difficulties reading the old Japanese scripture that is not standard Hiragana, Katakana, Kanji. Also a lot of the Heike references went over my head. It motivated me to go research the Heike Monogatari a bit more. On the other hand, the most non-Japanese thing was the addition of rock music and ballade in feudal Japan. This was so surreal to me when it began but this is what makes Yuasas works so fantastical and avant-garde. Amazing movie on an audiovisual level, but the plot and pacing lagged a bit behind for my taste, despite it being a short film at nearly 100 Minutes. |
